Date: 12/24/11 9:08 AM Looking for fabric for regency dress. I've been looking at cotton and poly cotton (silks are out of my league)...but what is poplin? Is it another name for cotton or poly cotton? ------ 'The purpose of most fashion is to be ostentatiously non-functional.' |

Date: 12/24/11 11:56 AM Cotton and polyester are fibers, or what fabric is made of. Poplin is the name of a type of fabric. It's usually made of cotton, and it's a "shirting weight," meaning, suitable for making nice crisp shirts. I would say it's too crisp for a Regency dress; it won't drape like you want (and it would crease ridiculously as you wear it).
If you're unfamiliar with fabric terminology, one of the best ways is to subscribe to RTW clothing catalogues. The item descriptions coupled with photographs of the garments will help you see what sorts of fabrics work for what types of garments, and you'll get to see fabric terms in action. -- Edited on 12/24/11 11:57 AM -- ------ ~Gem in the prairie |
