Date: 12/25/11 9:49 PM I have been watching this miniseries and I know I am supposed to dislike Soames but really, I feel sorry for him, the poor guy.
Irini is very unlikeable and kind of a miserable person--I mean, she marries the guy for his money, knowing she does not love them and then disdains and scorns him and takes up with her best friend's fiance. As far as I am concerned, beauty is as beauty does.
Well, that is my thoughts as far as episode 4. |

Date: 12/26/11 6:30 PM I checked this series on DVD out of the library a couple of years ago, and found it very enjoyable, even if it signals tiresomely whom we are supposed to like and dislike. Have not read the books, but they might make a great vacation read.
I also was sympathetic toward Soames Forsyte -- and wonder whether the books treat him with as heavy a hand as the 2002 miniseries. Probably do. As played by Damian Lewis, I thought it was the most compelling performance in the series, and I couldn't help but feel more for him than for many of the other characters for this reason alone.
Of course, those who know me might say I resemble him in some ways. ------ marjoriekh |

Date: 12/26/11 8:20 PM Damian Lewis is darling to look at, and a sympathetic actor. He can make you feel for Soames as a whole person, and thus he is not such a villain.
In the original series, Eric Porter played Soames. He was not as good looking as Lewis, and seemed older in the part, so it was easier to see him a villain, especially in the scene where he rapes Irene - these days that sort of thing is commonplace, but it was shocking in the 1960's, especially on the part of an educated, middle-class husband. All of this made his obsessive love for Fleur all the more interesting. ------ Barb |
