i realize this is largely a matter of opinion
But
Why is it that modern sewing machines are so utilitarian and well..ugly!
I haven't seem one modern machine that's caught my eye

Whilst the older ones are so aesthetically pleasing, with classic timeless styling and decoration!! not to mention well built , to last
I guess it's like everything else now, cars, buildings, clothing. furniture...eeek!!!

I love my FWs and vintage Berninas, but I also love my all white Quest Plus, my 820 (except the shiny black face), the navy and silver 440, the scooped in face and pastel, wedge-shaped buttons on my Pfaff 7510, and most of all my gorgeous new-to-me 630 Platinum Quilter's Edition. It might just be my prettiest modern machine :D. Lisalu posted a beautiful blue Fleetwood that I can't forget. I've yet to find the perfect pink machine...

well I'm nothing if not opinionated
I'm glad to hear I'm likely wrong too..it's discouraging to think that aesthetics might've gone by the wayside

I don't think you're wrong--I love my old beauties with the gorgeous decals. You can see my machines on my Webshots page, if you like.

Not wrong at all! I find a LOT of modern (and even some vintage ) machines to be ugly. And tastes change. I used to think Berninas were too boxy. I was attracted to the rounded Baby Lock Quilter's Choice, which now looks bulbous to me. Now, I'm all about boxy

I love the new Pfaffs and Berninas because they have clean lines and aren't made of shiny plastic - I much prefer the matte plastic. I think they look great, but I often wish I was more into vintage machines, because there's just nothing like the classic style of the vintage machines. I would to have one in a fun color, like the green Elnas or these pretty minty green machines I see sometimes. I just find that I sew better on a computerized machine. I just sewed on a friend's Singer 15-91 today, and it really made me glad to go back to my Bernina Aurora! I know that is sacrilege to some here! I can totally see how someone would love that Singer, but I just love my needle up/down, speed control, and fancy stitches too much! But her machine is beautiful in a way that I don't think my Bernina ever will be, even though I do like the way my machine looks.

I love the vintage machines despite them being black. But shiny black plastic, not so much. LOVE the avocado metal of my 731, my living room and kitchen are the same color. The 930 is like a layered latte. The Pfaff 1222 is one of the most attractive machines ever, IMO.

Several years ago I couldn't appreciate a boxy Bernina, and what I thought were weird looking feet! I fell in love with my curvy Elna, and now I'm back to the boxy too. I think the 800 series is gorgeous.
But, I also think my 730 is pretty sexy too, with it's stainless bed.
I also agree about the matte plastic. Several years ago I tested a Janome with the shiny plastic and just said no. Good quality plastic is why I liked the Pfaff years ago, and Bernina now.

Yes, the stainless steel arm on my 820 is a HUGE plus, I wish it were a Bernina standard. The 730 is beautiful, especially the right side. I preferred the look of the 350 to the 240, but went with the über-boxy and red-buttoned 240 for more features and a lower price. I sincerely hope Bernina doesn't make a pink machine anytime soon.

My guess is that high tech goes along with sleek, boxy looks?

It is strange, though. I absolutely adored the look of the 7-series Volvo autos with their square bodies, back in the mid-1980s to mid-1990s. However, I cannot stand any other boxy-style body of any other brand car. Go figure......
