Just received the most gorgeous fabric...

I am in LOVE! It is absolutely gorgeous in person. I'm hoping to have enough to make a dress, something similar to view C of Butterick 4443. I think the fuller skirt would look great in this (I sort of regret not buying enough for one of the realy full retro patterns!). I'm a little nervous about matching up the stripes and trying to figure out the layout. I'll tell you how I know later. Often it is easier to match a stripe or plaid if you cut a full piece instead of cutting on the fold. For instance, if the center front of the bodice is just the half piece intended to be cut on a fold, it is usually easier to trace it out to a full piece of pattern paper so it is easier to align it on the fabric. And, I've found it easier to cut pieces like the side fronts one at a time to get a really good match. Drawing extra horizontal lines on the pattern as a guide can help. If you are comfortable with moving the zipper from center back to under the arm, it is worth considering. Optimal matching will be limited by your yardage, so determine what is most important to match first. I would focus on the bodice. If you don't have enough yardage to align the stripes on the bodice to match, creatively and intentionally unmatch them. For instance if your side front bodice panel stripes do not align with the front center bodice, just be sure that they are mirror image to one another. Then they become a design element. I can tell you from experience, though, that if you can get those stripes aligned across the front bodice, it is a stunning look. You'll need to be creative when laying your pattern out for cutting and it will help to lay out the entire piece of fabric on the floor to study it with your pattern pieces before you start cutting. This is one of those times when you may find it is better to cut one piece at a time instead of two pieces as directed on the pattern. That would add some interest, too. Then you can use just the smaller piece for cutting the bodice. It won't be so much fabric to handle.

Even better! Can't wait to see how your dress comes out. If you are still nervous after looking at all of your pattern pieces, you could try a bodice muslin out of a cheap stripe fabric, even gingham, or a plaid for stripe matching practice. This is going to be fabulous. Such great colors. Yup if there is a problem iwth matching or not enough fab to do horizontal side, try bias. If you do that, and put on bias pockets or do a faux chanell trim with a bias strip, it would tie to gether. Matching is not as hard as you think if you cut single layer. When I am doing bodice pieces I catually trace the plaid on the edges of the pattern piece so I can match. Do remember that you aren't matching cut edges, you are matching the seam lines, which are 1/2 to 5/8 inches in from edge. I have found if I sketch the design onto the pattern piece, it's easier to match seam lines and control where bright colors intersect on certain parts of my body that do not need hightlights.. like my boobs! -- Edited on 1/9/12 8:44 AM -- ------ JanieV
