Date: 1/10/12 12:01 PM so i bought a new FW for a steal and it came with no bobbin winder. my goof, but not a surprise, because i could see in the photos it wasn't where it ought to be. i have second FW with a functional bobbin winder so it isn't the end of the world, but i can't fit the FW bobbins on my singer 347 winder or on my kenmore winder (which i hoped would be possible), so i am stuck if i ever want to move the new FW to my new studio space (the original plan).
is this fixable? the place where the bobbin winder would be actually appears to have broken off. is a replacement bobbin winder even an option or must my two FWs always travel together? ------ puu

Date: 1/10/12 12:15 PM If the FW bobbin will fit on it, a sidewinder is a good alternative, if it can't be fixed. ------ Doo-doo-DOO-doo, Doo-doo-DOO-doo......

Date: 1/10/12 8:57 PM I purchased a Deluxe Sidewinder and it does work with FW bobbins. I got it for a good price on Amazon and am very happy with it. ------ Viking D1, Viking 1+, Singer 503 Rocketeer, Singer 66-16 Centennial, Viking 910, Janome 1000cpx, Singer 221,221K, 222K, Singer 15-91 |

Date: 1/10/12 9:30 PM Do you have a picture of the damaged area? If it's the little arm that sticks out from the housing, this is definitely a replaceable piece. (salvaged from another FW) ------ http://jillybejoyful.blogspot.com/

Date: 1/10/12 9:33 PM If just the entire bobbin winder assembly is gone or damaged, that's easy to replace. Ebay often has them up for sale, and there are several online FW suppliers that will have one for you.
If the bobbin winder is broken off at the body of the FW, then no, there's no fix.
But...I never wind bobbins on any of my machines, modern or vintage. I use my Babylock bobbin winder. ------ I heart Babylock!

Date: 1/11/12 4:08 PM the piece is broken, lynn and jilly, so i may have to go with an off-machine solution. glad to know that they exist! is the babylock bobbin winder better than the sidewinder? the reviews on amazon were...unkind. ------ puu

Date: 1/11/12 7:51 PM It's pretty common, unfortunately, for the winder to be snapped off in transit (with poorly packed FWs), and there isn't any fix, but a bobbin winder machine is really wonderful to have.
None of my FW bobbin winders are broken, but I don't ever plan to wind a bobbin on a FW (or any of my other sewing machines) anyways...it's just so much easier and faster on a bobbin winder machine!
I've never used a sidewinder, but know a couple people who use one and love theirs. My BL winder is absolutely superb...but it's also expensive. I dithered for ages before buying one, coz the price is nuts. But I finally figured when you spread the cost over the years of use and ease of use...
So I sucked it up and bought one, and love love love mine. ------ I heart Babylock!

Date: 1/12/12 9:05 AM I use the cheap little $18 portable Sidewinder. It does the job fine although I wouldn't call it "superb". I never really thought of winding bobbins as a task that required an expensive TOL machine (but of course I am just a home sewer who winds a bobbin maybe once or twice in the course of a project.)
