My daughter-in-law wants a nursery that isn't doesn't look very "cartoonish." She's thinking more of a room our grandson can grow into rather than a child's theme... is trying to impress adults, more than the children. I kind of disagree, but am biting my tongue. I'm making her window valances out of a Waverly blue stripe that she ordered and making her crib dust ruffle out of a predominantly navy cotton with a thin white line that runs through it, making large diamond shapes. She found a pillow with an anchor on it and has picke dup some nautical home decor things (ships wheel, lighthouse, etc. ) at Hobby Lobby. she wants me to make a quilt for the baby to play on. It won't hang on the wall, so doesn't have to match the room decor. I'm thinking of using my new embroidery machine to do quilt square designs, but need background fabric. I've looked on fabric.com. 'Anyone have other sites for suggestions?

Are you a big quilter? Because I have the perfect pattern for you that has a sail boat on it. I even have the quilter picked out (another PR member) who I'd want to do my quilting when I eventually make this thing, she has this whimsical boat in the waves design she can do!

As far as fabric, maybe checkout Connecting Threads or Fat Quarter Shop

Oh but that room can be very cute.. and grow with the child for a while.. until your DIL or the child gets tired of the decor.
With a nautical theme you can mix in pirates and monkeys and so on.. a couple of cute quilts would really make that room.
We are buying a lake home soon.. and so I have been buying nautical themed fabric.. seashore themed and so on for quite a while.
It would very easy to do a large sailboat applique on a quilt background.. But even just a pieced quilt with the right bright colors would be fun.. Since it will be used on the floor I recommend something pretty tough in fabric.. and washable .. such as cotton duck.. or a denim..

NOW those are cute.. Would make a fab quilt.

Am hoping CJ chimes in here shortly.. she would know much better than I which fabrics would be best for a quilt to play on..
