The beginners class starts on Sat Feb 4th and goes 8 weeks. I will be learning a lot. Here is a list of things the class teaches in those 8 weeks and what I will learn in techniques:

rotary cutting
strip piecing
1/4 inch seams
half square triangles
quarter square triangles
flying geese
piecing seams
top borders
adding borders
bottom border is rail fence

I hope this makes a lot of sense to those of you who quilt. I know what each of these things look like, as I saw the finished quilt top yesterday. Mine will me much more suttle and not so bright in color as the sample was. My goodness, she used bright colors for it.

I am signed up for the class and I will be paying for it this Saturday at the open house in the stores new location. The class info is from a reply from the teacher to me this morning. The quilt size is a huge 67x85. It is a sofa sized lap quilt or a full sized bed quilt. What am I going to do with it when it is done is anyones guess.

In future classes, I will learn to do the backing, so I can make smaller things at home and finish something to show off my creativity once again.

All this for only $40. The classes are 2 hours each Saturday for 8 weeks. By the time the class is over, I hope I am hooked on quilting, or at least some of my former creativity
comes back. It has been dormant for 4 years now and I need it back.

I am a Quilter at heart. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors. Recently I have discovered I enjoy doing applique. I love making pictures. Using a sewing machine is much easier than counted cross stitch or oil painting for me. I enjoy landscape quilting as well. I am working on my first applique project in the spring of 2014.

So exciting! $40 is an absolute steal for what you are getting, you should have a really solid foundation by the time you're done.

I am mostly self taught, but never coud have gotten started without the few months of classes I took at my wonderful LQS...just one rail fence quilt, but it got things rolling

Best of luck, make sure to post updates for us!

I agree, that is a good price. I am thinking that is because you will be buying your fabric from the same store????

I expect to do so. I already have some, but only for a small quiit. I bought it after Thanksgiving.

Any idea how much fabric would be required for a quilt 67x85 size? I know I do not have much in stock, so I will be buying more. A yard of 5 colors that go well together and half a yard of another in the same family will not make a large quilt. Just the binding would be a big amount. We shall see...

We will get the supply list at the first class. The first class all we bring is pen or pencil to take notes. I'll take my sewing notebook.

That is a very good question but the answer is not so simple because it depends on the block design and border design too. The estimate of 5-1/2 yards might work for the backing. Binding doesn't actually take that much yardage because you can cut on the cross grain.

The Quilter's Pocket Reference - An easy Guide to Yardage and More is a must have in every quilter's reference library!

Just something I noticed, your class does not include preparing a quilt for quilting, machine or hand quilting and binding...are those classes available afterwards so you can finish your quilt?

Hope you have a great time learning, quiltmaking is really good fun!

It does sound like a lot for $40. Maybe basting, quilting, and binding will be another series. Either way, a good start. With your creativity, you can go a long way from a solid start. I think it's REALLY valuable to have a finished product at the end of a class. Go LTS, quilt like the wind!

Hope you have a great time learning, quiltmaking is really good fun!

The only other class that could teach binding says it is a " traditional binding method as well as a facing binding method. You will also learn how to prepare your quilt after machine quilting so it lies flat and square."

Is this what you are trying to tell me about? The only other classes are designs or bom stuff.
