Subject: Sea Island cotton and two fold poplin source in the States? Date: 1/11/12 5:30 PM I want to make a very dear friend a bespoke shirt. I called the only shop I could find in the States that carries these fabrics and requested some swatches. When I told the man on the phone what I was interested in he actually asked 'Are you sure there isn't something else you'd be interested in? Those run over a hundred dollars a yard.' After a second to compose myself I said that was fine, and that I'd still like the swatches.
I'll do it if I have to, but does anyone have another source for them? Rosen and Chadick is the only one I've tracked down so far.

Date: 1/11/12 7:15 PM you can try.. http://hst.com.sg/cgi-bin/ss000002.pl?page=search&SS=Sea+Island&search.x=0&search.y=0&PR=-1&TB=A
If the link does not work the name of the place is Hwa Seng Textiles, they have very nice shirting fabrics
Hwa Seng Textiles.com.sg
If you get some please post a review. I have never bought any, and I can't say where they are located, maybe China? |

Date: 1/11/12 7:46 PM Thanks! They do have some lovely shirting!
Their 200's are $182/metre. After shipping I'll probably be better off going with R&C. -- Edited on 1/11/12 7:50 PM -- |

Date: 1/12/12 2:37 AM I don't know if they are 'true' sea island cotton, but Farmhouse Fabrics (.com) advertises a lot of heirloom cottons along those lines, and the pieces I've gotten from them have been lovely. ------ I've moved! Visit my new sewing blog at http://chiralcraft.wordpress.com

Date: 1/12/12 9:36 AM I know it's not you asked but Fabric Mart is currently having a sale (today only with the code "EGYPT") on their Egyptian cottons. It's not as fine as Sea Island stuff but pretty nice stuff either way. Maybe you can call Mood in NYC or LA and ask someone specifically? Oh, maybe even Michaels Fabrics in Baltimore, Maryland. Sherri and Michael are super nice and helpful, and they're a mom and pop store. ------ I'm finally a blogger!

Date: 1/14/12 10:21 PM Sea island cotton is indeed the finest. The hand of it is comparable to vintage liberty lawn, but thicker and a different weave. I have a wonderful collection that I got from Michael's Fabric in Baltimore and would recommend it for shirting. He also has wonderful prices. Once I finish with my present job situation which is very time demanding, I plan to sew a stack of Colette men shirts for dh.
Also collect liberty lawn. Those will be for my shirts. :) |

Date: 1/15/12 11:46 AM minggiddlylooloo ~ Thanks.
P.S. ~ I got my swatches from R&C yesterday. I would order the stuff by the mile if I could. It's absolutely amazing. After the shirt I may have to go back to saving my pennies so I can get enough to make myself a slip. A little extravagant, but oh. so. worth it! |

Date: 1/15/12 2:19 PM Please post a pic of your fabric when you get it, and it would be grand to see a review of the shirt giving detail description of working with this fabric. |
