I just have to tell you gals about one of my gifts from my husband this year for Christmas. There have been many times that I have been jealous of the skills your husbands have when I see a sewing cabinet that they've made, or a table that they've altered. My husband is a writer (among other things) and I'm the one that has a closet of tools. Then he does something like this and I remember that I have the best man in the world.

So, on Christmas day, he handed me a card that read like this--

(In Tim Gunn's Voice)

Merry Christmas, Designer! And, welcome to the first ever Project Leuinda Holiday Challenge!! As you know, the inspiration for a garment need not always come from the fabric itself. Sometimes it's the little things--a frill, a button--that makes you want to create the whole. And that's what this challenge is about--little things. For your next piece, you will start with a detail and then work your way up. Choose one item from this accompanying package and make something that meaningfully incorporates this item. Your budget is this $50 gift card to Mood (plus any out-of-pocket expenses). We know you have kids and are responsible for dinner, so you have an indefinite amount of time to complete this challenge. Most importantly, have fun and make it work! --T.G.

With the card was a box that contained three items he had picked out from Mood. 2 yards of some loopy stretchy lace, three large brown buttons with a lavender edge, and a military-esque olive patch with gold starts. Of course there was also the $50 gift card to Mood. I'm just so over the moon about the card and how perfectly he nailed Tim Gunn (one of my favorite tv personalities) and the fact that not only did he get a gift card from Mood, he spent time there walking down the isles and checking out the notions. What a guy.

I just had to share this with you because I'm sure you will appreciate it!! Right now, I'm thinking of making a thick corduroy or wool skirt that has a kick-pleat at the front leg and putting the three buttons above the pleat. Sounds like it could be kinda sexy, right? We'll see. First I thought about doing that along a back kick-pleat, but hubby said, " I think Michael Kors would say that it's dangerous to put large brown buttons on anyone's backside, [in his best MKors voice] ' I mean, it looks like she just pooped buttons, right?!' " So I had to re-consider. I'll keep you posted!

Leu

Here is my all-call for a pattern for the skirt.

What a fun husband. And thoughtful, and several other things I'm sure you could add.

Again and again, it just seems that the sewing personality seems to attract wonderful spouses.

Looking forward to seeing where those buttons poop, , whoops,, pop out.

If my hubby had done that I would have cried with joy. What a thoughtful thing to do. He is a keeper. Mine is too.

Love, love the gift. How thoughtful, how clever and how right on target. Thanks for sharing.

Regarding the skirt: A heavy corderoy or wool with a kick-pleat could make you look bulkier than you are. Buttons in the back are uncomfortable when you're sitting down (plus whatever else), buttons in the front above the kick pleat could draw unnecessary attention to your crotch. How about a below-the-knee, slim wrap or faux wrap skirt with the buttons vertically aligned along the "closure"? If you have just a few, line them up from the bottom, if you have enough for the whole seam, space accordingly starting below the wait or hip (for comfort).

To mind comes an ancient Burda patterns (probably from the 90s) like this that I always loved so when you mentioned what you would like to make, I thought of it.
