Date: 1/13/12 10:56 AM I won't be buying this right now however I would like in the future to purchase a lightweight machine to take back and forth to classes. I have to pass up a fun looking class that lasts 6 months to make this
class
cos no machine I have is light enough for me to lug back and forth. This looked like it would be a lot of fun. It's every Wed night and after recent events I could use a night away from the house for awhile. |

Date: 1/13/12 11:00 AM Take a look at either a Singer Featherweight 221 or a Singer 301. The FW is the lightest, but the 301 isn't much heavier, and has a handle on top to carry it around without a case. If you find one that's mechanically sound, but cosmetically challenged, they're cheaper than the WalMart specials, and should last forever if well-cared for. ------ Pat in Rockport, TX

Date: 1/13/12 11:05 AM I just checked, and Singer 301s have been selling on eBay for well under $200 lately. Several 221s have sold for under $200, as well. You can easily learn to do the basic cleaning and maintenance on these old mechanical machines yourself, saving that yearly trip to the sewing machine mechanic. ------ Pat in Rockport, TX

Date: 1/13/12 11:06 AM Do you think you would like Janome 2212? It does well sewing & is about 13 pounds I think & has handle. It is between $119 to $149 depending on where you find one. I think Sew Vac Direct lets you do layaway. Just a thought. ....
An interesting pattern for the class. ------

Date: 1/13/12 11:18 AM If you are looking for a modern machine, I've been very pleased with my Brother SQ9000. It weighs about 10 pounds(9.8 officially),
the regular foot is hinged so it goes over thick fabrics with no problems, and I've had no problems with it at all.
I'll be taking a free motion class and in testing out this machine with the foot, it did very well..stitch looks very good.
I did review it when I got it and do need to update that review, but I have been sewing steadily with it since and no issues at all.
Mine is a refurbished machine, so was less than the current listing.

Date: 1/13/12 11:32 AM I would love a featherweight, however I've yet to fine one affortable. I was looking at the cheaper machines from Sears and Walmart. I know you get what you pay for but I would only used this at class. I was looking at the Janome Gems not sure how much they are smallest budget possible for this machine. |

Date: 1/13/12 11:43 AM I got mine from Ken's...fast shipping, no problems. It's still listed at $169.99...no dvd with it, but it's a simple machine to operate.
Hope this price point is better for you and DH.

Date: 1/13/12 2:23 PM That is a pretty good deal and with full warranty. That is half of what they go for new and free shipping. I definitely can't do it until after the 18, (new credit card cycle). But it would per perfect for what I need it for. I have to make a decision on the class Tuesday it starts Wednesday. Plus I gave up my entire Christmas bonus to pay credit card bills for Christmas and then some. |
