I love to FMQ - but, have tender wrists.

Ive thought about getting one of the straight stitch machines for faster sewing and never really thought about getting a frame untill today -

Does anyone have some experience using a mid arm on a frame?

I dont think I could afford to spring for anything big (like the 18 inch true long arms) - but, the mid arm + a frame is kinda resonable priced.

I love the look of FMQ and miss not doing it as much. Maybe this would be a way to be able to do it and not pay the price with pain in my wrists?

I have a Brother 1500 straight stitch machine on a Grace frame. It does make FM easier, but because it's a mid arm machine, you have to roll up the quilt often . I can quilt between 4-6 inches at a time. It has its limitations, but it sure beats spray basting and manually pushing fabric around.

Thank-u anna

The set up you have sounds like exactly what I have in mind.

Do you take your 1600 off the frame often? Is it hard to keep a nice speed/stitch?

Even with a smaller space - I think I would like doing it.

I had a Pfaff Grand Quilter and an Inspira frame when they first came out and enjoyed using it but mine was only set up half sized, about 5 feet I think because while I could have had room for 8 or 9 feet the 10 foot size was just too large for my space so it's usefulness was limited. I loved using it and think the metal frames are not wobbly. Some of the early ones made of wood were. I used to monitor a yahoo group for this machine and there were lots of different frames represented.

Than you -

I joined a group awhile ago for a grand quilter/mega quilter (etc.) but never signed back into the group - I kinda forgot I had joined.

I was just poking around and saw what looks like a nice combo deal on a machine/frame --

I'll keep poking around - I love an obession - now, Ill have to find what I think is the perfect combo!

I have a Nolting 17 inch harp set up on the stretch Hinterberg frame. Mine does have a stitch regulator and it is fantastic for doing quilts. There is a learning curve, even just learning how to load the quilt but it is the only way to go if you have the space for it. I've learned a lot from some great video's, books and forums online. One I highly recommend is Yahoo's homequilting systems group. In the file section you will find ton's of information and a wealth of knowledge to help you get started. Just the other day I saw a system almost like mine on Craigs List for $3500 including everything. There are many sites that sell used quilting systems because gals/guys move up from the mid-arm systems to a larger machine. The homequilting yahoo group also lists a for sale section. I can't imaging doing a quilt without my system

thank u, i love the yahoo group link. ill join!

when i watch the video's it does look the the loading part is hard to get just right .. or, maybe complex to learn .. then gets more routine - but, still a challenge.

there is so much to learn. I wonder if i can live without a couch? Thats the only space I have to put a frame! HA!

I was going to ask you where you planned to put it, since you said before that you have a micro-condo. Too bad the machine quilting frames can't be suspended from the ceiling like the old hand quilting frames. There are some table-top models that can be dismantled. They sit on a banquet-like folding table. The Quilting Board has a lot of members with those kinds of set-ups.

Haven't put my 820 on the frame yet. There's a quilters' forum called the Quilting Board.
