With the Golden Globes just on and People's Choice awards. Got me thinking if I truly had seen a very good movie this year. I saw 3

1. The Help, this is excellent because it's based on a very good book and they stuck to it. Excellent screen play. There are some funny moments but I don't consider this a comedy.

2. Bridesmaids, Sometimes we really forget to laugh and this movie is non stop women's humor.

3. Water for Elephants, we all need romance this is one, a bittersweet movie. I liked it a lot and I know everyone kind of makes fun of Robert Pattinson and the vamp stuff. But there is a very good actor hiding under those fangs. I saw him in another movie, Remember me which was very good.

I've seen I think four of the movies being tossed around as Oscar contenders, and I would rank them in this order: The Artist, Midnight in Paris, The Descendants, and Young Adult. The first three were all excellent; the last one, interesting (and great performances all around), but a distant fourth. The Artist I could even see again.

Without question - "The Help".

I don't think this qualifies for this years' trophies (Oscar, Golden Globe - whatever) but another movie I saw that was out of this world was "The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo". The rest that I saw were mediocre at best.

Have not seen "The Bridesmaids" but I have heard it is really good too - more than just a chick flick. I like chick flicks in most cases but I don't get to see many 'cause DH doesn't like them.

It is -30C here today (-40 or so with the windchill). It is expected to be this cold for a good week. So I think we will watch the "The Bridesmaids" on PPV this weekend - assuming the remote hasn't frozen.

I think your husband will like Bridesmaids, it's not a true chick flick. It's more like a sick chick flick. My 30 year old son suggested it to me.

Not a huge movie watcher but did see the Danish version of "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo", excellent.

I liked Hugo very much - although DH & I splurged for 3-D ($36 for two tickets! yowza) and regretted it. It didn't add much to the experience. The story is charming, and suitable for the whole family.

Probably not up for any awards, but surprisingly good - Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I think one review called it intelligent summer entertainment, and that sums it up. Andy Serkis as the motion captured chimp Caesar was actually better than James Franco.

Suo ergo maledicto

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. - Steve Jobs
