Date: 1/17/12 7:09 PM I have a 230 and love it. It is not my only machine and I mostly piece quilts with it but today I free motion quilted with it because my go to machine for that function is having a long overdue trip to the spa! I would think the 215 would sew the same (wonderfully) but have fewer stitches. I don't use most of the stitches the 230 has - I do use the blanket stitch the double blanket stitch the satin stitch and sometimes the buttonhole function so I wouldn't worry about the number of stitches. Go and try it!

Date: 1/17/12 8:26 PM iSewQuiltArt wrote a great review of the 215. I bought my used 440 based on her review of it (and the Berninablers on PR) and "going Bernina" has been one of the best things I've done for my sewing/quilting. I have the 240, and it has really exceeded my expectations. It sews just like my 440, just with fewer features. Same power, same precision, same ease. I think the 215 comes with snap-on feet and an adaptor shank, but you can buy the full shank feet if you prefer. I didn't go for the 215 because I love the knee lift and wanted appliqué stitches. ------ Berninas 820 QE, Artista 630 PQE, Aurora 440 QE, Activa 240, 930 Record, and 731 Baby Lock Quest Plus, Featherweight 221s... |

Date: 1/17/12 8:41 PM It truly is the entry level Bernina- you get the Bernina hook mechanism, you can use all of the Bernina feet, you can modify needle position, width, and length for all the stitches, but..
11 stitches-- straight, zigzag, running, triple, blind, double overlock, stretch overlock, super stretch, honeycomb, darning and manual buttonhole-- and that's it.
No provision for a knee lift, no pressure adjustment, somewhat small.
I have a 330, to which I've added the knee lift. The automatic buttonholes, the start stop button, the gathering stitches, the single stitch button, and the blanket stitch have all proven to be quite useful.
(And if I had a 350, I'd probably find a number of the additional stitches, such as keyhole buttonhole, to be invaluable.)

Date: 1/17/12 9:12 PM Actually, I emailed Bernina not too long ago asking if the 215 could be fitted with the knee lift and they emailed back that it can be added. |

Date: 1/17/12 10:24 PM I do not personally own the 215, but my best sewing buddy does, and she often brings it with her when we have sewing time at my house. I have tried it and is a really nice machine. Has the same great stitch quality the pricer ones have. It is limited, few stitches and if you want a knee lift (IMHO) go for a 240 if you can find one. Or sometimes bernina offers the 330 with the knee lift as a bonus or they did back in August. The fact is you really cant go wrong with Bernina but you will not get as many bells and whistles for another brand for the same money. |

Date: 1/17/12 10:42 PM Well, well, well. If the knee lift can be added, then it would make an excellent machine for piecing quilts. |

Date: 1/18/12 0:15 AM Just to caution you about adding the knee lift. It can be pricey especially if you dont shop around. I was thinking of buying a 220 floor model form a dealer, and asked how much the knee lift would be to add she told me it was $500 but she would give me a deal for $250.
AHHH no thanks.
I went to see a friend who is also a dealer, small cute nice shop in Mt Kisco NY. Pins and Needles, great person. (she would be my dealer if she didnt live so far away) Said she charges $85.00 and if you need to put the mechanism in like with the 215 it would be maybe 130.
So be careful is all Im saying. |

Date: 1/18/12 10:28 PM It cost me $120 for one on my 220 but that was about three years ago. Still, glad I did that! ------ So many projects, not enough time
