Date: 1/19/12 5:28 PM My nephew is having a formal wedding in May. He and his beautiful bride already got married as he is going to basic training next week. This all happened kind of fast but they are now planning a "real" wedding and they want to include their horses. They asked me to make some kind of decorative saddle blanket. I think we would use the standard horse blankets and just add a decorative piece that would fit between the blanket and the saddle so that it showed. My sister was thinking something satin or satin like. We are planning on decorating manes and tails with ribbons and flowers. Anyone have any ideas about how I would do this? A website that might have ideas? |

Date: 1/19/12 5:41 PM We used to braid manes and tails the old-fashioned way: by hand sewing them. Then, you could sew in thin ribbons and flowers.
But whatever you do, get the horses used to it. Aren't they the funniest things? I worked at a hack stable on Staten Island. I was a wreck taking them out in a public park one 4th of July. To my astonishment, the horses were totally fine with firecrackers.
But then, wouldn't you know it, one of them shied at a moving piece of newspaper in the road and they all got a little nutz after that.

Not what you are thinking of, but on one of the bridal TV shows a year or so ago they had a traditional Indian Wedding. The groom had to arrive on a white horse that was beautifully decorated. ------ Proud parent of a Dwight International School Honour Roll Student |

Date: 1/19/12 8:13 PM Perhaps you could use a brocade fabric (found at Jo-Ann's) to decorate the back of the horse from the rear of the saddle back. Just an idea... ------ Judy |

Date: 1/19/12 10:46 PM My horseback riding experience consists of a mix of wild terror and exhilaration when I was young and poor and rode with another young and poor friend who happened to have two horses. Poorpigling and some others living in the DFW area would be surprised at where we road those horses - bareback - no money for saddles
But even though I don't know horse stuff about saddles, I'm wondering if there would be some fabrics that would be dangerous to use under a saddle. I'm concerned about slipperiness.

Date: 1/20/12 3:20 AM Here's a website that makes custom decorative saddle blankets, so you can get an idea of what they can be. You might look into making blankets in the couple's wedding colors, perhaps monogrammed or with their wedding date on the blanket.

J --thanks for the idea about braiding the ribbons into their manes and tails. I was trying to figure out how to get the ribbons in their manes-now the next question is will they let us put ribbons and bows on them and just how long will that take (I am not the fastest braider).
Michelle--That Indian Wedding horse blanket is really beautiful--too over the top for me I think
Judy-the brocade fabric might have some potential; I bet we can find something in my niece's colors (I think a maroon or wine color)
7yrstitch-I got a chuckle out of your horse story. How can you live in TX and not be familiar with horses? I know what you mean about fear and exhilaration-I feel that way every time I ride. I am not the horse person in the family. I share your concern about slippery fabric-I can just see the saddles going sideways while they are on them...
Mary that website gives me some ideas.
I think after talking again to my sister that we want something to cover the saddle-blanket. I kind of like the idea of it extending over the horses backside too. I was thinking maybe two pieces with an opening for the saddle straps to go through?
This is such an unusual project.

Date: 1/20/12 6:04 PM Can you get a kid to braid? I don't know what they charge now but it used to be 5 bucks a mane, 5 bucks a tail (in the Stone Age...)

Date: 1/20/12 6:58 PM take a look at Suitability Patterns (http://www.suitability.com/) They have a photo gallery with all sorts of "horse clothes" (costume contests, Halloween, etc). Their patterns are great and reasonably priced. You might get some more ideas there. |

Date: 1/20/12 7:26 PM Will they be using english or western saddles? I made decorative saddle pads for my daughter's 4H drill team. I used purple felt that had a glitter to it, finished the edges with white woolly nylon and had the 4H logo embroidered in white on the back end. It was very reasonable and looked fabulous. You could do any colors. We just threw these over the girls actual saddle pads. We used long curly ribbon in the horses tails that we hooked in with the banding elastics. (we did not do manes just for logistics purposes as they would be in a rush with quick changes) One of the moms stencilled purple sparkly stars on the horses backsides.
They looked fantastic. AND - all our horses were not the calmest but they all handled the extra glitter without a problem.
Have fun coming up with ideas!
