I have to be in NYC in a week....I am hoping to squeeze in a fabric store run but am very very bad with directions/orientation. Are there any fabric stores walking distance from the hotel (which by the way is ridiculously expensive....are they all that much in NY?) DC prices are less than half what I was quoted there...

Thank you!

The hotel's near/at Grand Central terminal isn't it? The garment district is nearby and an easy walk past the NY Public Library (with the lions out front on 5th Ave) and Bryant Park. There's a shop with all sorts of fashion and sewing (Burda) magazines on 4oth St between 5th and 6th/Ave of the Americas across from the library and Bryant Park. Further west (between7th Ave and 8th Ave) on the same side of 40th is Paron's for beautiful discounted fabrics. Somewhere on these boards is a link for a list of NYC fabric etc shops and notions stores. There's Pacific Trims (30th between 7th & 8th for zippers cut to length in every style and color, buttons, lovely helpful staff), and M&J ( 6th Ave between 38th & 37th for ribbons and trims) for starters. That part of NYC is all arranged in a grid and it's hard to get lost. The blocks between the aveues are long but the blocks between the streets are very short. Go for it. Even if you just make it over to Parons you'll be a happy shopper.

In This review is a hotlink to a Sew-ers Map of NYC. You should call ahead: I'm not sure how many of them are Orthodox.

Say Hi to the Library Lions up 42nd St, as m/m mentions: Astor and Lenox are their formal names, but New Yorkers call them Patience and Fortitude (left to right as you face them...)
