Date: 1/21/12 10:57 AM Help please. I am cutting out a blouse pattern which has a waist to bottom dart but not a side bust dart. I must make a FBA but do not want to add the side dart. I remember reading a tutorial somewhere showing how to rotate the side dart to the bottom and then just cutting it off. I believe it involves tracing original line of adjusted pattern, etc. Does anyone know what I am talking about, and can you help?? |

Date: 1/21/12 2:26 PM Cathryn, I think the one you are looking for is on Debbie Cook's Blog: Stitches and Seams. It might be listed as a dart rotation on a raglan sleeve, but shows how to draw the side seam before opening the new dart. I was just searching dart rotations myself and came across this. |

Date: 1/21/12 3:23 PM Thank you, JTink, that is exactly the tutorial I was thinking of. Although I couldn't wait and divided my dart into several and distributed it along the side, to be eased into the back. So that may work too, haven't gotten to cut/sew muslin yet, hopefully tomorrow. But, now that I know where this tutorial is, you can bet I will keep track of it. Debbie is such a doll and her tutorials and tips have been a lifesaver more than once. So Debbie, if you are listening, thank you once again. |

Date: 2/1/12 10:31 PM For more information on moving and changing darts, you should look at this tutorial from 1942. Unfortunately the original site is gone, but the Way Back Machine still has an archived copy. I have saved it to my own computer so that I don't lose it, as it's a great resource.

Date: 2/1/12 10:55 PM Lareine, great information on your link. It's a bit of a glimpse into fashion history. Put me more in touch with the idea of the ladies of the house, or, a traveling dress maker having to fit and fashion on the spot without depending on purchased patterns.

Date: 2/2/12 4:55 AM Lareine, I actually have that book. Years ago I started reading excerpts from it online, then downloading and printing parts, then I just went on a search and found and bought the book itself. It is a great book and timeless. But I was trying to find the specific process of removing the dart excess which I had read about before and which JTink found for me. (BTW, think I will take the book to work with me today to look at during lunch). |
