I have a sizable collection of Masterpiece Thread in 3000yd cones. I can easily use them on my Janome but need a thread stand for my 240... What I haven't figured out is how to create a thread path from the cone to the machine so that the thread feeds horizontally to the first guide as if the thread is coming from the Bernina spindles. The only way I can think to do this is to tape a paperclip to the spindle. I have tested this and what is annoying is the paperclip would eventually fall off because of the tension exerted on it by the thread. Does anyone else have a work around for cones? I know this sounds lame but is that why Bernina only endorses Mettler thread? I only find Metter on standard thread spools - they fit beautifully.

You can use something like this: Wonder Thread Guide.

You can always make your own. I did when I had my 350E. Does your 240 have a vertical spool holder that folds up on the right side? You can attach a piece of wire similar to the one on the wonder thread guide if you do. I used electrical wire and coiled it around a spool pin then made a hook for the thread to pass through. It worked perfectly. Perhaps you can you tape the paper clip on the top right of the machine, laying flat, partially over the edge so you can thread it? With it laying flat and taped well (maybe use blue painters tape so it won't leave a residue), it might stay in place well.

I'm not familiar with your particular machine, but I have made extra thread guides for a variety of machines by placing a bobbin on the spool pin, and threading through one of the holes on its side. Any bobbin will work, as long as it has at least one hole on its flanges.

I was thinking of that as well but did not mention it. I am glad you did! The bobbin can be held in place with the spool holder. This bobbin has a lot of holes on both ends, so this solution would work beautifully for Warbler.

Thanks for the link to the wonder thread guide I have seen these at Nancy's Notions and considered getting one but I could never really bring myself to buy it, thinking there had to be an easier fix without out the cost. The paper clip wire just might work that way.

... I was getting ready to post when I saw Jennifer's bobbin suggestion... I ran to my machine to set it up and voila! Just the ticket.

to you both for your help!

Why I didn't think of it myself... doh! I've been sewing with plastic Janome bobbins for so long, I would have never considered it with those.

Bernina makes a thread guide adaptor for just that purpose. It's not expensive if I recall... but mine's been on my 630 so long I don't remember.

It's a white piece that slides on the spool holder, with the metal hook at the top if you can tell from my picture.

Oooh CJ that's terrific. At least that metal loop has no sharp edges. Do you remember if you had to make adjustments in thread tension. As much as I love the bobbin idea I had to make a minor change to the tension. No big deal but I wondered if the sharper edge of the bobbin accounts for that.

That looks like a mega king cone of thread behind your 630 - What brand of thread is it?
