Date: 1/24/12 5:10 AM I'm very busty. I'm short-waisted and expansive-chested and have a bra size so big I can wear the cups on my head like a hat (yes, I've tried). My experience of wrap dresses has been unfailingly revealing, even the ones I purchased at great expense from Bravissimo that were designed for busty gals such as myself. Acres of cleavage on display, and in no way work-appropriate without a camisole underneath. So when I asked on here for advice on flattering styles for me to try, and people kept suggesting Vogue 8379, I didn't listen. I didn't trust my plus-size sistren, and thought I knew better. Thought I wasn't the right shape for work-appropriate wrap dresses and that was that. Thought Vogue 8379, despite its 101 (and counting) reviews, was Not For Women Like Me.
Boy, was I wrong. Finally decided to give it a whirl yesterday when I picked up 3m of rayon lycra for a steal. Cut out the fabric after work yesterday. Sewed the dress after work today. Fits like a dream. Flatters like a dream. Has a deep V but does not show any cleavage whatsoever (how it manages this, I still do not know).
I cannot apologise enough to those I should have listened to. You were all right. The 101 reviewers of this patten, women of all shapes and sizes, were right. This is possibly the most universally flattering style in the universe. I have sewed it once but I have certainly not sewed it for the last time.
Lesson learned. Listen to the ladies of the Plus Size Sewing board, and do what they say!! |

Date: 1/24/12 9:33 AM Yeah! Glad to hear it worked for you. I too am way busty (bra on head kind of busty) and very short waisted. That pattern was designed for us! It's wonderful to not have to alter a pattern to fit! I've made one of these a season for the last three years. In fact, I'm late making my Fall/Winter one and was going to cut one out this weekend. ------ http://kimsewsilly.blogspot.com/ |

Date: 1/24/12 9:36 AM I think the deep-V-but-no-cleavage is due to the waistline pleats. It allows for enough fabric to keep everything covered.
And since you are short waisted this pattern is indeed perfect for you! So glad for your success!!

Date: 1/24/12 1:26 PM Congrats! How does it fit across the butt? I have acres of high hip fluff! Do you need a narrow hipline to make this work? |

Date: 1/24/12 1:45 PM I'm built like an "8" with my high hip as much as my regular hip. I think this fits well over it. Just my opinion. ------ http://kimsewsilly.blogspot.com/ |

Date: 1/24/12 3:22 PM I cut an 18 and then did an FBA on it because it was still necessary for me despite the pleats (and that had the other benefit of bringing the front up to about a 22, which is what I need on my front side). Right now I have a dart in front but I will rotate that into an extra pleat or something next time I sew this one.
The fit over the butt is fine. I have some high hip fluff (could also describe myself as an "8") but the fit and drape are both very flattering. The skirt on this one is lovely. I can see a wrap skirt and a wrap top in my future, created from this pattern, as well as dresses.
I'll do pictures and a review when I am finished the dress completely. It's not hemmed yet and I also found a sewing error near one of the wrap ties so will have to fix that.
Can't wait to finish the dress completely so I can wear it! -- Edited on 1/24/12 3:26 PM -- |
