I have a sewing related blog. I make Judaica, prayer shawls challah covers, synagogue furnishings - if it's Jewish and fabric, I make it.

Sometimes I get comments from actual blog readers. It's always nice to get comments.

I also get comments posted by commercial sites that sell prayer shawls. Actually, let me rephrase that, i get postings that sometimes are related to the content of the post and sometimes not. All contain an embedded link to a commercial website. I never publish those comments. I always get annoyed by those postings, because they seem to be at their core, not quite honest. I am always ready to engage in an acutal convesation. I don't like the conversation just as an opportunity to drive readers to their store. I'm a small deal operator. I work on my own and have a small but steady roster of clients. These places are stores selling an array of commercial items. They are not posting to really voice an opinion but just to drive business to their websites.

Am I wrong to refuse to publish those fake posts?

NO it's your private blog and you have a right to have on it what you want. Do you want to give them free advertising. I have a quilting blog but being the un-conventional quilter it's not all that popular and I don't post alot cos of time restraints. But I wouldn't allow those people on my blog.

Those comments are, in effect, spam. Don't give them the satisfaction. They can start their own blogs.

You don't have an obligation to give a free ride on your coat tails.

It's your blog, all of the content should be what pleases you. And, if it is in your control, the content should also be what is a pleasing reflection of you.

You should not take spamming (is that the correct term? invasion??) of your blog space personally, the culprits don't. Treat it the same as you would if someone demanded that you wear a walking billboard advertising a massage parlor.

Earlier today I called the folks who run that Judaica site to complain to them. I explained that since they were selling religious articles, this not quite moral way to drum up business was not the way to do business. They agreed with me and said they would stop. This is just one of several vendors who has done this. I think I will need to do this one call at a time..not fun...but necessary.

No spam comments are allowed on my blog, which I generally define as linking to a commercial site not related to sewing or the content of the blog post. If it makes you feel any better about not publishing them, 99% of them are automated. There is no real person on the other end. You're not hurting anyone's feelings.

some spam comments are very clever. I sometimes google commenter's IP and find it is on the list of blog spammers.

The website claimed that it was the person who they had hired to maximize traffic to their site who had posted the comments.

It's just a crummy way to drive business to a site. I have no problem sending the comments to the spam bin. I also think that it is important to be in touch with the people responsible for generating the spam ( the Judaica store who hired the traffic maximizer) to let them know what they are paying for.

Every now and again spammers show up on PR's message boards, too. Whenever I see one, and they're very easy to spot, I alert the moderators so the post can be removed
