440 demo from dealer or 630 on EBay

Hi I am new to the forum . I am trying to decide whether to buy a 440 or a 630. The 440 is at a dealer 2 hours from me but it is her demonstration model and she wants $3000 for it without the embroidery component, and she says that is her lowest price. I can get a 630 for $3800 with both the BSR and the embroidery Unit (Offer on the free embroidery unit ends on Jan 31) The problem with the 630 is that it is on EBay and is a Bernina dealer in the UK and would have to be shipped to Canada (free shipping). Can I have people’s thoughts on this, as I know dealer support is important and I am worried about damage with shipping, it is new and in its original packaging. I can’t get a 630 here in Nova Scotia at all so buying it here at a dealer isn’t an option either. I like that the 630 uses a USB stick instead of a computer. I spoke with a 2nd dealer here in Nova Scotia to see if she has one and she told me the 630 has been replaced with the 580 and her price for the 580 was $8200 and she wasn’t sure if it included the BSR but thought it must at that price.
I love to quilt and have not ever embroidered but I do want to learn how and use it on my quilts and clothing.
Thanks for any advice anyone has.

Hi I just emailed you from the yahoo forum. This a great place to get ideas and feedback. Rereading this now Im thinking your dealer is telling you there are no 630's so they can sell you a much more expensive 580. I am seeing red flags. Be careful.

Hi! I also answered you privately through the yahoo group. The 580 replaced the 640, as they are both 9mm stitch width machines. The 580 comes with the embroidery unit. I can't verify the price. The 630s are still available from Bernina. The 440s aren't. A dealer can buy a machine from another dealer to sell to you, at least in the US. Love my 440, but I definitely recommend the 630 if someone can afford it. $3800 is more than I'd want to spend via eBay. Good luck.

Can you try another Bernina Dealer in another part of your country?
I would steer right off ebay purhcases of that type and value, as well as possible fraud or damage that could occur you will want warranty support and I am pretty sure you won't get that across the oceans. Imagine for a minute if something goes wrong, they would want you at your expense to pay shipping both ways to have it looked at. It would be hugely problematic.

I think you are much better to find a good dealer even if it involves some travel to another area in your own country rather than attempt to buy it from an overseas seller or a local dealer who is not giving you the choices you want.
As far as discontinuation of machines goes I believe the 5 series is actually the replacement line for the Aurora machines and that there are still the 630 and 640 in the line up that continue to be available. The 440 and 430 are not being made anymore, and depending on your country the 450 might not. It is not even sold in some countries.
Be wary of any dealer that is giving you information you cannot verify as fact from other sources in an attempt to gain a sale, and even more wary of buying from online sources a new machine of this callibre.
Goodluck and remember there are big differences in service across dealerships that you can receive, so any travel time and expense has to be seen in the context of service excellence- if you find a great dealer, they will be worth it!

Thank you for responding, I thought if I posted on both websites I would get a wide variety of answers. I am going to pass on the EBay deal and try to search out a 630 even if I do have to travel to another province to get it. I did check out the EBay merchants real store in Bournemouth UK, he has a lot of Bernina machines and has all his prices posted. I was surprised that he was able to do that plus sell on EBay if he is a Bernina dealer, I didn't think Bernina let their dealers do that. I contacted a few dealers in Ontario and they wouldn't give me prices by email they said they weren't able to. I will keep looking and will let you know what I find. Thanks again

I think Bernina dealers in Europe can give prices on their websites.

There are several VERY reputable dealers in the UK who use eBay to sell their machines. I know the one you are refering to. I have bought from him in the past, from his actual store, and eBay, and he is great. I do agree that you should buy in Canada, though, if you can, for the support, and warrenty validity. I am not sure if the warrenty would be OK if you bought from over here, though, I 'think' Bernina might have some sort of international thing. After all, people do move about an awful lot

Computerized machines...dealer ABSOLUTELY! Older mechanical OK to buy from e-bay but always be prepared for a problem.

I wonder what would happen if you traveled to the dealer and took with you the printed ad from Ebay, than asked for their BEST price for the machine? Maybe they could come close to the Ebay price or throw in some feet for other things to sweeten the deal for you.

It is worth trying anyway.

Thank you so much to everyone who has responded to my dilemma, both online and PM I have done more research on dealers and I found a dealer 5 hours away who has a 440 new with both the BSR and embroidery unit for $2699. which is $300 cheaper then the dealer closer to me and her unit is used for classes and store demo. The dealer 5 hours away also has a 630 which has been used twice with the BSR and embroidery unit but she has to send me the price tomorrow as it is in her store and she can't remember the exact price because it is on sale. The responses have really helped me narrow down what I want and the importance of dealer support and warranties. I do have an email into Bernina about the warranty, some people who emailed me thought the warranty was world wide. One thing I hadn't thought about with the machine from the UK was that I would have to purchase a 110 cord, and there is the uncertainty about how much duty would have to be paid.

I will keep you posted on the 630 the dealer 5 hours away has and her price and my decision and I am sure I will be using the posts for advice on my new machine. It is so nice to share common interests.
