Date: 1/29/12 5:50 PM Anyone reading anything right now that they're really enjoying? I'm currently slogging through Absurdistan. Only 50 pages to go -- yay! Not sure what I'll read next.

Date: 1/29/12 8:34 PM I just finished reading Stasiland by Anna Funder about the East German secret police before the Wall came down. Fascinating account of the how the Stasi operated and their effect on people, both the spied upon and the spies. Basically East Germany had a society that, so far as we know, most approximated 1984. North Korean may have them beat but then we may never know. Between the paid Stasi and the unpaid informants there may have been an informant for every 6.5 citizens of the GDR. Their methods of spying on and manipulating people were often quite, well, imaginative but not in a good way. Bottom line is fascinating book and a fairly quick read.
The author is Australian but the book is out in paperback in the US.

I'm loving Stitch Magic by Alison Reid as well as Sewing in a straight line by Brett Bara. |

Date: 1/29/12 8:58 PM I have about 30 pages to go in "Explosive Eighteen," by Janet Evanovich. It is good, but not as as the one previous to this which was just so funny it was impossible to put down. I am also reading the John Guy biography of Mary, Queen of Scots, and "Murder in the First-Class Carriage," about the first known murder on a train in Victorian England.

Subject: Whats everyone reading? Date: 1/29/12 8:59 PM I am proofreading a fiction novel from a friend of mine about Tennessee during the pioneer days. I'm on the first pass for the storyline and plot before I start nit picking it.
As to actual books available, I'm reading Stephen King's The Stand for the umpteenth time (and out loud to DH and the baby, cause babies need bedtime stories!) |
