Date: 1/30/12 4:28 PM Just ran into a Kenmore Model 16 on Craigslist and I'd appreciate feedback from Kenmore users whether the machine is worth purchasing for $25.
I THINK Model 16 is also known as model 158.160. And there aren't any reviews on this model on PR.
Its a zigzag machine, made in the late '60's.
Any thoughts? |

Date: 1/30/12 5:34 PM My Mom had this machine. She got it new in the early 70's and she used to sew matching Easter outfits for us and other things. I remember using it in junior high for a project and it sewed fine. She would say she always had to be adjusting the tension but that could have simply been user error. It had cams for decorative stitches and was in a very nice desk. She got rid of it when moving a few years ago...it was heavy! I wish I'd had the interest in old machines that I do now and taken it.
You really have nothing to lose in getting it! See if they have the stitch cams and all. Kenmores of that time usually came with lots of attachments in accessory boxes. -- Edited on 1/30/12 5:36 PM -- |

Date: 1/30/12 6:45 PM It comes with a lot of cams, feet, etc. I think I'll go for it. If they're asking $25 and its been sitting for several weeks, they'll probably take less than $25 just to get rid of it.
Thanks for your help. |

Date: 1/30/12 7:28 PM Please post how the sm is when you get her home. Many of the 158 series Kenmore's are highly thought of here. I hope it is a very good sm for you! ------

Date: 1/30/12 10:53 PM I was checking is this the machine listed here?
model 16
From what it looks like it's a nice machine. I think that machine would be worth it for 25.00. I also would take the machine in and have it cleaned and tuned up.

Date: 1/31/12 4:19 PM I just verified that its a model 158.161. I think it was made in the early 70's (not in the 60's). It has a verical bobbin case which I really like.
I'm going to try to get over to take a look at the machine this weekend. |

Date: 2/4/12 3:03 PM I hope you were able to get this machine - and that you're happy with it! My Dad bought this machine for me when I was in the 4th grade - 1966. He was impressed with the 1.2 amp motor! It was a truly powerful machine, and needed very little maintenance and upkeep. In case it didn't come with the cams, this machine uses the reversible cams, and NOT the top-hat style. They are often available on eBay. The only thing this machine didn't do was a stretch stitch, as I recall. I started sewing when I was 9, and I made several outfits for school, as well as all of my Prom dresses. This machine is a workhorse!

Date: 2/4/12 3:41 PM Excellent machine. It is a real workhorse and will sew thru almost anything. You can do the cleaning , oiling and greasing yourself. The manual tells how in great detail.
Good luck |
