Date: 2/2/12 1:15 AM I'm wondering if I messed something up when I cleaned/oiled my machine. The bobbin tension is just too loose. It sews beautifully if I thread the bobbin for embroidery. I am scared to mess with the settings on the bobbin case, but don't want to have to take the machine to the dealer for this either. When I look at it, it looks to be set right--the dot is just offset like it should be for factory tension settings.
Anybody else experience this?

Date: 2/2/12 1:58 AM Well, I think I found my problem. I don't think it was my cleaning, but changing to Presencia thread that caused it. I had presencia in both the bobbin and top, and when I went to take sample photos to post, I changed my bobbin thread to mettler polyester (was going for a pop of color to show the issue) and now my stitches look beautiful again. So, I guess I will have to change the bobbin tension to use precensia thread in the bobbin.
Anybody else use presencia thread? Do you use it in the bobbin too? Do you alter your bobbin case or just thread for embroidery? ------ Berninas 830LE ♥ Artista 630PQE ♥ Aurora 440QEE ♥ Juki TL2010Q ♥ Pfaff QE 4.0 ♥ Singer 221 ♥ Kenmore 1040 ♥ Elna 'Grasshopper' ♥ Singer 500a 'Rocketeer' ♥ Babylock Evolution |

Date: 2/2/12 9:00 AM I don't have the 830, but have been told that all Bernina's tensions are set for the Mettler thread. I have not had tension problems with anything other than both my 730 and 350 not really liking thicker thread in the bobbin. So, I bought a new bobbin case to handle that.
I did have a problem initially with the 350's tensions even with Mettler thread. Then for some strange reason it seemed to resolve itself. Now I seem to be able to use both Mettler, Metrosene, Gutterman, and Coats, both in the bobbin and upper with no problems. Weird.
One good thing is that Berninas have either the pigtail or the hole in the top of the case so you can get a bit more tension that way for different threads.
I'm glad you figured it out.

Date: 2/2/12 9:24 AM I know CJ uses 60 wt Presencia for piecing, maybe she can comment. On her recommendation, I bought a big cone of a neutral and LOVE it even more than Aurifil and Masterpiece, especially for thin batiks. So far on my 820, I've only had to adjust top tension or thread it as for embroidery to get the right balance. I really appreciate the jumbo bobbin and thread cutting feature, but the 8 series bobbin system is still mysterious and intimidating to me compared to the CB hook system on my other Berninas, which seems so straightforward and accessible. ------ Berninas 820 QE, Artista 630 PQE, Aurora 440 QE, Activa 240, 930 Record, and 731 Baby Lock Quest Plus, Featherweight 221s... |

I have a B330, and had some problems initially with stitch quality, too. I was only able to use Mettler, now I can use other threads, like Gutermann, and the stitching looks beautiful...Wonder what was up with that???? |

Date: 2/2/12 9:34 AM I would buy another bobbin so you can set the bobbin to that thread and leave the other one alone. I have several bobbins that i have set for differen't typs of threads. ------ ý1 Corinthians 13:4-7 "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. Date: 2/2/12 9:40 AM Yes, really strange! And, it's why I use that one the most actually. I want to make sure no more tension problems creep up while it's still under warranty. ------ Bernina 730E, 350PE

Date: 2/2/12 10:15 AM The 8 series has a unique bobbin system, no removeable bobbin case as on other Berninas, but the manual does explain how to adjust the bobbin tension. I just haven't been brave enough to try it yet. ------ Berninas 820 QE, Artista 630 PQE, Aurora 440 QE, Activa 240, 930 Record, and 731 Baby Lock Quest Plus, Featherweight 221s... |

Date: 2/2/12 12:22 PM It is very easy to do! I was scared do do it first but the multipurpose tool fits right on the bobbin case and slowly move it to the right or left. Just remember to line up the dot on the bobbin case to the diagram on the door to return to normal tension. ------ ~Diana~
