Can anyone tell me what the longest basting stitch is that I can make with this machine?
I'm trying to decide on a new machine and have been looking at both the 580E and the 830. The basting stitch is pretty important to me and I do know that the 830 can do what I want but I'd just as soon buy the 580E (for a whole lot less).

From p 68 of the manual:

Quote:

Reverse pattern foot No. 1C
Basting stitch No. 21
̶ straight stitch, sews out every fourth stitch, i.e. longest stitch possible is 20mm, when the stitch length is set at 5mm. Recommended stitch length 3.5-5mm
̶ for work which requires a very long stitch ̶ basting seams, hems, Quilts etc. ̶ temporary joining ̶ easy to remove
PPreparation
█ pin work at a right angle to basting direction ► to prevent the layers from slipping
Securing/fixing the thread
Lower feed dog, sew 3-4 basting stitches at the begin and at the end.
Thread
Use a fine darning thread for basting as it is easier to remove.

Re: Basting Stitch

Go to search function.
In messages, search these two words strung together with no space in between:
needle thread

Check out Magic Needle thread.
(You will not need the name of the poster, leave that blank.)

The 8 series have a 6mm length stitch while the 580E has 5mm as its longest. With the 8 series you do not drop the feed dogs for the basting stitch. I wonder why you have to with the 580E? I know you can also use the long stitch function with the basting stitch and it makes it very long.

It's to secure the stitch, should you wish to do so. Normal basting is done with the feed dogs up.

It's something to test out a the dealer, anyway.

OK, I'm prejudiced, because I love my 830 big time, but if cost is the only reason you are considering the 580, maybe you want to wait until you can get the 830. You may be money ahead to do that, rather than get the 580, and then end up with the 830 down the line, anyway.

lgrande, what is your definition of a basting stitch?

I ask because before I bought the Bernina 580 I considered a basting stitch to be a stitch sewn with the feed dogs engaged to feed the fabric, a long stitch length and a reduced top tension. However, on the 580 there are different types of basting stitches, plus you can program your own basting stitch. They have stitch #21, plus what they call the "long stitch", then you can also baste with the feed dogs down if you want really long stitches, longer than 20mm, and you can program your own basting stitch. So to properly answer your question I'd need to know exactly what you want to do.

Personally I don't use any of the basting stitches on the 580 but instead program my own.

How do you program your basting stitch.

Firstly the "basting stitch" I like for my garment sewing is a straight stitch (#1), longer stitch length (4.0) and reduced top tension (about 2.5) with the feed dogs engaged.

I selected all these settings then saved the stitch in the Favourites folder so it's permanently saved. Every time I want the basting stitch I just go into the Favourites folder and it's there. HTH

Thanks so much to everyone who responded to my question, I've never seen a forum before with so many really helpful folk.
I went to my dealer's yesterday morning for a sewing class and with full intentions of buying the 580 (which was out-of-stock, but one was on the way for me). Instead, the dealer had a floor-model price on the 830 which I simply could not resist (it was $2000 off regular price). So, I am now a proud owner - problem solved!!!
