Date: 2/5/12 9:47 AM Since I just purchased my 830 I am looking forward to the mastery classes. However, my sewing room is on the 2nd floor of my home and I'm thinking I won't be able to lug the thing downstairs and load it into my vehicle.
My dealer (small town) may or may not have a demo model available to use in class.
What do you folk do?
Yesterday when I went to a class I took my Janome 6600 and it was plenty heavy for me to carry. ------ Linda

Date: 2/5/12 10:38 AM I highly recommend taking the master classes. Maybe you can find/hire someone else to carry it for you. I carry mine in the crook of the elbow, close to the body. My arm goes through the harp. Sometimes I will put machines in a sturdy laundry basket and carry them that way to the dealer.
There was a recent thread about the rolling bags for this machine. |

Date: 2/5/12 10:39 AM Are the demo classes one to one? If so I would wait until they have an in store demo and take the classes then. Usually for the 830 it is not a huge class!!!! You have it home now I suppose? If not have them give you a one on one for a long day before you bring her home. OR take the machine in for a long one day class...or even 2 so you are only taking the machine in once. No way would I take it in for just a few hours class. Then you can down load the mastery class workbook and do it at home and call or go in for help sans machine. ------ formerly kirstensews

Date: 2/5/12 1:33 PM I bought a Blue Fig #23 combo rolling tote for my 830LE, but it's still very heavy and difficult to get in and out of my SUV. But it's a better alternative for me than carrying that huge machine. I would definitely recommend taking the Mastery Classes. ------ Bernina 830LE, Bernina 630E, Bernina 1300MDC |

Date: 2/5/12 1:43 PM Thanks for the input. I unpacked my new machine this morning out in the garage and brought the individual pieces upstairs....the machine alone must weigh at least 50 pounds (I'd like to know just how much) it was like dragging a dead body up the stairs.
It was a struggle to get it placed and I don't think there's any way I'd ever try to carry it back down and get it in the car.
I will just have to work with the dealer to take my classes when they have a demo I can use.
As an added note, I was pretty cheesed to find that there were a lot of accessories missing from my boxes (this is a floor model 830).
Needless to say I will be on the phone tomorrow morning to complain...the whole accessory box was not in the packaging so I have no extra feet, bobbins, stylus, etc., etc.
I have no doubt that the store will make it good, but I'm ticked all the same.

Date: 2/5/12 2:58 PM Congratulations on your new sewing machine.
The 830 mastery classes at my dealer are nicely handled. We students bring our computers and work with the online 830 simulator. By the way, the simulator is very easy to follow, I did a little practice run through before class. It is requested that each student bring their laptop and a mouse. I took a seat cushion. The Bernina veterans brought little computer lights since the room had to be darkened for the projector.
The instructor leads with the simulator projected on a class screen. Additionally, there is an 830 in the classroom on a rolling stand that is at the right height for the students to stand at it to practice threading, working with the bobbin thread, etc. They leave plenty of room for the students to gather around the machine and we each practice the critical hands on functions. Hands on with installing the embroidery module and hoops is also practiced at the single demo machine. Works great; the hands on practice is like a little break time.
If you have to take own 830 for classes, had you considered keeping it downstairs for a short period of time? Or, maybe you could check out the simulator and ask if you could just bring your laptop in for the classes. It is the threading, and the bobbin threading in particular, that you will need to practice hands on. They can work with you on that outside of class. Maybe the needle threading and how to handle the module, too.
Sorry to hear your dealer does not have the 'check out' program that my dealer has. They go over a checklist and an inventory, one-by-one, before loading the machine up in your vehicle. Their checklist includes going over key hands on issues with the machine. When they go over the inventory, each item is removed from the packaging to visibly identify it. They set aside over an hour for this process.
I'm sure your dealer will take care of you. I think the machine weighs 42 pounds. My checkout packet also included pictured instructions on how to carry the machine and this was emphasized by my sales lady and, again, in class. My hubbie is a sweetie and he is the designated carrier for updates. I only intend to take the 830 in for the new enhanced maintenance class that the dealer is offering.
If you do decide to play with your machine today you'll want to have a tiny mirror on hand to help with learning how to thread the bobbin. (I hope they showed you this at the dealer.) When they pull your accessories together for you, it will include a little dental mirror; a tiny mechanics mirror that is adjustable works even better. There are videos on youtube to help you through the two different ways to thread your bobbin; one for sewing and one for embroidery.
Best wishes, I'm sure everything will be smoothed out for you quickly. ------ I have no idea what Apple thought I was saying so be a Peach and credit anything bizarre to auto correct. |

Date: 2/5/12 3:28 PM Huge congrats first of all! Also there are great online classes available at http://www.exnovodesign.com/sewing.html. Additionally the yahoo group Bernina_series8 is super helpful. My dealer has not yet offered the mastery classes since I brought home my 830le in December and these have really helped me until I can take the classes. -- Edited on 2/5/12 3:29 PM -- ------ Berninas 830LE ♥ Artista 630PQE ♥ Aurora 440QEE ♥ Juki TL2010Q ♥ Pfaff QE 4.0 ♥ Singer 221 ♥ Kenmore 1040 ♥ Elna 'Grasshopper' ♥ Singer 500a 'Rocketeer' ♥ Babylock Evolution |

Date: 2/5/12 4:45 PM My sewing room is also on second floor. I ended up putting the heavy machine in my living room on a sturdy sewing table. It's not quite as convenient, but it sure saves my back:) I was too worried about tripping on the stairs. My machine is about 45 pounds. I made a cover that fits in with the decor of the living room so it doesnt look like a misplaced eyebrow:) |

Date: 2/5/12 5:12 PM I carry my machine like dfsews. It is the best way according to Bernina. Remember to have the machine facing out. I think your dealer would provide a machine if possible. If not, then have someone help you carry the machine into your car. Someone at the dealer should carry it in for you. The mastery classes are very helpful, so determinately take them. I was fortunate and had one on one classes. Usually there can be up to 8, but I was the only one. ------ ~Diana~

Date: 2/5/12 11:07 PM Make sure you go through the list of accessories very carefully, because there were all kinds of extra little boxes and goodies that came with mine. I'm spoiled by a wonderful dealer.
Monday you'll be able to call with questions to your dealer when you run into something you don't know.
The threading you have to learn, then your hands just do it automatically. You can't hurry this machine, be patient when giving commands on the screen. |
