Date: 2/7/12 12:55 PM Hello , this is my first post so pardon me. I am looking for a new sewing machine , I currently use a Brother LS2125I which is okay for light sewing but I wanted something with a larger work space and a stronger motor .
I was checking ads online and saw a man who is selling his mothers bernina from 1970s? it hasn't been used since that time .
I was planning on taking it in and seeing if it needed repairs but not entirely sure how much that would cost with this brand of machine.
Is buying a sewing machine that has not been run for 40 years a terrible idea or a thrifty one?

Date: 2/7/12 1:03 PM Does the desk/chair come with it? It probably will need oiled if not cleaned. It is mechanical by the looks of it, so it should be easy to get it into shape if needed. I think if it sews when you test it and you can turn the hand wheel easily and has the accessories, go for it. -- Edited on 2/7/12 1:04 PM -- ------ ~Diana~

Date: 2/7/12 1:06 PM What is the model number? You can call any sewing machine dealer and ask if they will quote you the blue book price.
The machine will need to be serviced, so expect to invest around $70 or more if parts are needed.
Depending on the blue book quote, I might ask for a lower price based on the service fee.
If the machine does not work out, you can remove it from the cabinet, add a shelf and set your current sewing machine in the cabinet for a large, smooth work/sewing surface. |

Date: 2/7/12 1:11 PM Thanks I wish I knew more about the machine but the seller is very vague about its details . I emailed him about the model number , hopefully he can get back to me.
The table and chair is even included so I guess it should be worth it with just that. |

Date: 2/7/12 1:18 PM It would be worth it for the desk and chair. They look to be in excellent condition. ------ ~Diana~

Date: 2/7/12 1:21 PM It looks like the flatbed equivalent of the Bernina 802 Sport-- there's no buttonholer dial. The beige area on the right side make me think it's a flatbed, the shape of the head, and the coloration of the dials makes me think it's a 800 series machine, rather than a 700 series machine. |

Date: 2/7/12 1:31 PM Scratch that, it could be a 817.
817 manual
The 817 has six stitches. |
