I'm starting a Hand Sewing, Sew-a-Long.
To show just what can be done when you had sew and that it can be fun. You don't always have to use the machine. You can take your time and sew by hand instead.
Re-discover skills and learn new ones.

I'm sewing a shirt 99% by hand (I did use a machine on a bit of the collar but found it just made everything more tricky) and my next one will be 100% by hand.

Once I sort my sleeves out next step is hand sewing buttonholes....five of them.

I'm working on hand sewing a vest. I have the shell put together. Just testing bound buttonholes right now.

I'd love to join I'm not sure how to start, though. Any thoughts on a project & getting started?

Oooh. Well theres vest or shirt. Or bag, hat (beret type), cushion is good starter.
I chose a shirt as its small enough to be manageable.
I can point out some nice hat tutorials. Where are you at experience wise with hand sewing?

I think this is a great idea. I have for a long while now wanted to at some point, hand sew a "delicate" blouse, maybe silk chiffon, or the like. Still hope to get to it some day. Your shirt is an inspiration, and looks great, please keep posting pics.

You should so try it. You'll never know if you don't try. A silk chiffon blouse sounds cool.
I've also got a beret hat (going for 40's look with pincurls) and some 'slippers' in my to do list.

No so much experience at all, except for small parts of machine sewn garments...

This is a great idea. I need something to do so I can keep my hubby company while watching tv. He is always wanting me to watch a little tv with him in the evenings but I prefer to be in my sewing stable. If I could find something to pick away at so I am at least present in the room he'd be very happy. (of course give the requisite comment or two on whatever he is watching...).

Any good tutorial sites with various stitches to use/practice ?

Also anyone seen one of those large magnifying glasses that sit on your chest (preferable with a light)online for a decent price? (showing my age much or what?)

I think start with something simple then that you can embelish and try out different stitches...get confident...and learn how they look on both sides of the fabric.
e.g. I noticed that herringbone stitch makes a pretty lattice pattern on the front but really tiny almost invisible straight stitch on the other side.

btw. will put up pic soon. Sewed a beret in one evening all by hand. It was my wearable 'mock up' to see sizing. Bit of a snug fit will try it with material with a slight stretch next time.
