Date: 2/8/12 7:13 PM I have a Necchi Super Nova Ultra that sews like buttah. It has a high shank. Does a Griest buttonholer I have for my Old Black Singer (1950, low shank) fit it, or do I need another? |

Date: 2/8/12 7:20 PM Griest made about 10 models of buttonholers for various models of machines, up through the 80s, until they went out of business. There is a chart I posted on here earlier that tells you exactly which model you need. A search should turn it up... |

Date: 2/8/12 10:49 PM As far as I know, ALL the Greist buttonholers are for straight stitch machines. That is, even when used on a zz machine, you set the machine for ss and it moves the fabrics side-to-side.
Singer's Professional buttonholers, which are the only ones I know of that require zz, were made by someone other than Greist.

Date: 2/9/12 8:44 AM Can't you get an adapter to use low shank feet on your high shank machine? That might be easier than finding a high shank BH. It's been a while since I looked, but it seems like the majority will be for low shank. It might be something to think about if you have trouble finding a high shank one.
Most of the older Greists were made in the 50s, before home ZZ machines were available. If they were still in business in the 80s, then they sold a ZZ BH. Singer has a couple of different models of BH (like the ones in the space capsule that my mom had) and the ones made after about 1970 all use the machine's ZZ. I prefer the buttonholes made by the straight stitch buttonholers. |

No, the later ones were made for zig zag machines too. I had a low shank one that I used on my Bernina 930, with an adapter. Had to saw the case in half to get it to fit. It didn't move the fabric from side to side, only around in the shape of the buttonhole. The models that are specifically labeled for straight stitch machines wiggle the fabric as they move it around. |
