Date: 2/9/12 1:37 AM I have a viking sapphire. the material I am trying to sew through is 2 layers of doubt knit fabric.
at first there was random loops of thread on the bottom from the bobbin. Afterwards, I re-threaded thru the needle and the bobbin. Changed the needle. Changed the tensions. Everything. After than when I tried a zig-stitch, the stitch i wanted appearedon the bottom but the top had way too much bobbin thread.
finally I just agave up.
I have NO idea what to do with it. |

Date: 2/9/12 7:50 AM I'm so sorry to hear you're having this problem. How frustrating. Unfortunately, many of the early Viking Sapphires have tension problems (I own a Viking Platinum works perfectly). I don't know how long you've owned your machine, but perhaps you can have it serviced or return it for a refund. You should read the Sapphire reviews here on PR. Here's one that discusses the tension problems. ------ The essence of life is statistical improbability on a colossal scale.

Date: 2/9/12 6:32 PM yeah, had it for over a year. don't know why its doin this. arghhhh! and I have had tension issues before. so much for auto-tension lol. I don't think that i can return it this late in the game. maybe I'll see if I can sell it and buy a different sewing machine.
ideas ladies? |

Date: 2/9/12 6:52 PM I have had tension problems with one of my vikings; they were resolved when I started making sure that the presser foot was up when I turned the machine on. If it's down, and under pressure, the auto settings seem to get goofed up. Hope it's something like that, since that's an easy fix. No problems since, works flawlessly.....

Date: 2/9/12 6:55 PM Well if it was mine, and I don't have one at all, the first time I threaded it up and got thread loopies on the bottom of the fabric, I would know that was because of some kind of miss-threading issue on my top thread, that gave me no or not enough top tension there. Some things that might do that, would be not getting thread into top tension device just right, the thread slipping out of the slot on the thread take up lever while sewing, or maybe trying to sew with my pressure foot still up.
Then the second time when I had re-threaded everything again, and all the first time kind of problems went away, but then i was getting new thread loopies on the top of the fabric instead, then I would know on that time around, I had some kind of miss threading issue or no tension or not enough with the bottom thread now instead. Some things that might do that, could maybe be putting in my bobbin with the thread feeding off it in the wrong direction, not getting thread though some tension slot in a bobbin case or it not staying in there while sewing or even having some thread fluff holding open the tension device in the bobbin case.
But either way, I think you had two separate problems, for those two separate kinds of things and events. I think it's way too hard to trouble shoot any of that stuff while sewing on knits and with a zig zag!
So best I can recommend is get the knits out of the machine, rewind a whole new bobbin with new thread top and bottom, get another new needle, re-check all your threading and instead just get the machine to sew a nice straight stitch on two layers of firmly woven cotton first. No matter what. When you like that, then zig zag that way, when you like that, then only try to sew on your knit in zig zag afterwards, because then you know it really is working good and all threaded up right and such. |

Date: 2/9/12 7:06 PM I have found this to be pretty much the standard:
Loops on the bottom - top thread is at fault - make sure the presser foot is up when threading and none of the guides or take-up lever have been missed.
Loops on the top - bobbin thread is at fault - make sure the bobbin thread is feeding in the correct direction from the bobbin spool and through the tension gage on the side of the bobbin case. |

Date: 2/9/12 7:36 PM Take it to your dealer to be repaired, it's probably still under warranty. ------ My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since. |

Date: 2/9/12 11:33 PM You might also try a different brand of thread. I have three Vikings, and while they will usually sew with any thread, each one has certain colors/brands that give me trouble. I absolutely cannot sew with Coats & Clark Black thread on my Diamond, for instance. My #1+ will sew with almost anything, including some 8/$1 TGY thread that has to be 35-40 years old but refused, absolutely refused to sew with another brand (Corticelli) in a dark color a few weeks ago. When I changed brands in the same color, it sewed fine. ------ Total fabric on hand: 1/1/12 1598.9823 yds.
