I'm curious, what are some of the best blog hosting sites that you've seen or used? Blogger and Blogspot are run by Google, so especially since the recent discussion on here about trying to find Google alternatives, I think I'll avoid those if I start a blog. But I'd be interested to hear what sites you like -- what about Wordpress? Tumblr? Posterous? Others?

I'm interested in beginner-friendly free sites, with nice themes.

I have used blogger and multiply. Currently on Wordpress and loving it. Simple lay out yet easy to build up if you want to for not excessive amounts of money. The free templates are enough for me, but a friend of mine has a bought one and her own website address added.
It also allows easy use but multiple parties and multiple blog under one account, which both are great attractions for me.

I also love the fact that you can follow your comment lines and can easily read other blogs that you like. If you want to get other blogs based on your interests then it is easy to find, if you don't that is fine too.

The blog can be hidden from search engines or open, it can be completely private too. Easy pulling posts from one blog to the other. I love it and no I don't work for them :-)

I have a blog on blogspot and one on wordpress. Wordpress had a steep learning curve for me, but in the end I like it so much that my website just points to it. The interface is easier to navigate and I like the way it goes together.

Thanks! So far Wordpress is getting the most votes.

I'm also curious about how to preview the themes available on different blog sites. I tried looking through the ones on Tumblr, and it took ages and ages for it to load all 1200-ish... I finally gave up. Then I searched by keyword on Wordpress, but most of the (very ordinary) keywords I tried turned up almost nothing.

ETA -- OK, found the theme gallery on Wordpress.

OK, so... I did it. Signed up on WordPress and got started. I'm keeping the blog private at least until I've got it really going and it looks the way I want it to. It will take me a while to figure out how to set up the page, change the look, put up a background photo, etc. A LONG while!! At the moment I haven't figured out much of anything. I have a definite look in mind, but right now I haven't got a clue how to get there. I will eventually, I guess!

I went with Wordpress simply because that is where my DD has hers and I didn't know where to start. It is just about as easy as posting here. There are a bunch of things I don't really understand yet, but I am just using it to document my gowns and not too interested in how many viewers I get, so I haven't done much with themes, etc.

Your blog looks great. I'm not really thinking about viewers -- I just want a certain look, and so far (even though I have picked a theme), I haven't figured out much of anything about how to use their template. It seems a lot less obvious than posting stuff here! But I suppose eventually I'll figure it out.

Can I also ask a question? If you do set up a blog, how do people find it? I tried to make one a year ago, and if you put in the search topic into google, the blog never came up (so if I did not actually tell someone the link, they couldn't find it.) Is this because it was blogger vs wordpress? Or maybe there are extra things you have to do....?

PolishPoppy: commenting on others' blogs, networking on blog sites, linking to your facebook account, etc. all can get you more views. I've discovered that I got more views from a tutorial I did that people came back for.

I get a decent amount of views now after 3 years (somewhere in the 100 views range), but no one hardly comments.

I find blogs all the time from here, other's blog rolls, searching Google blogs for stuff, wordpress tags and people that email me to look at their new blog. Some I like well enough to add to my taskbar in Firefox (where I keep my own list of blogs I really enjoy) so I go back. Some of the ones I have are new, some are several years old, some update rarely, some update all the time. Content is key to having people find you and getting search engine results, the more you do the easier it will be to find you.
