Date: 2/9/12 4:56 PM I recently bought a bunch of fabrics on sale to figure out what different fabrics were.
I'm having a hard time trying to decide what to make with Charmeuse. Can anyone recommend a pattern to use with 2 yards.
I'm going on a cruise quite soon, so more formal tops would be okay, or something I can wear to work with a suit jacket.
I'm quite petite (though about a pattern size 12/14), so I'm thinking if a dress is light on fabric I could squeeze it out of 2 yards.
It is dark blue so maybe there is a skirt that this fabric would work for? Having a hard time picturing that.
I'd rather not order online- so big 4, things I can get at Joanns would be appreciated.
I appreciate your suggestions! |

ETA: I know charmeuse might be soft for this but you could put some interfacing on the back if you need a little more body. -- Edited on 2/9/12 9:28 PM -- |

Date: 2/9/12 10:17 PM It won't take two yards of fabric, but the tank from Simplicity 2938 is quite popular and flattering to a variety of people--the princess seams make it easier to adjust for fit, too. It is also easy to sew. I've made a couple of them and I know I'm not the only one who's made multiples!
**edit** I forgot that it actually came with a dress drafted already!

Date: 2/9/12 10:26 PM Oh, that's nice. And that tank would mean I have enough to do a muslin and then the real thing! |

Date: 2/9/12 10:58 PM When I think of charmeuse, I think bias cut, because it drapes so beautifully on the bias.
If a drape neck top is your style, you could make any view in Butterick 4132 with your 2 yards except view E, the long-sleeve -- unless you happen to have 60 inch wide fabric, in which case you could make that, too.
I happen to have 4132 in my stash, though I haven't sewn it yet, so I thought of it first, but there's also Vogue 9771, which was first reviewed in '02 by Ann of Gorgeous Fabrics, and is still in print, so it obviously has staying power.
If you go to the advanced pattern search page, you can search specifically for reviews of tops and dresses other PR members have made out of silk charmeuse. ------ marjoriekh |

Date: 2/9/12 11:12 PM Oh, those are both gorgeous. I love the drape neck.
There is a bias cut Vogue dress I'd really like to make, but I need a bit more than 2. I want to lay it out and see if with petite changes made to it if it fits. Vogue 1208

Date: 2/10/12 8:32 AM The first dress that came to mind for me was Vogue 1236. I find charmeuse frustrating to sew on with it's slipperyness and I would pick a pattern with only a few seams. This too would be easy to petite, just shorten the shoulders.
There is a Simplicity (I think) blouse that has the bottom bodice cut on the bias that was real popular but I can't find it now. A couple versions had a tie neck and there was a skirt with it. I just had it out the other night but don't remember the number and can't find it. ------ http://kimsewsilly.blogspot.com/ |

The few seam advice is good. I like the dress you posted- kind of a sack of potatoes dress, but the belt makes it look fitted. I'll check some reviews out.
Thanks! |

Date: 2/10/12 6:06 PM I decided on Simplicity 2692. If I do one of the short views without a tie, I should have enough.
I also bought spring loaded scissors so now I can hopefully actually sew! I sprained my wrist and can close scissors, but not open them... |
