I sold both my vintage Singers today (503A and 734). I've tried and tried but the sad truth is......I just don't like sewing on mechanical Singers. There, I said it. I want to like them, but something about it just doesn't make me happy like sewing on my Viking Sapphire.

Maybe one day I'll try again with a mechanical machine, maybe one day I'll fine one I love. For now, I'll stick with my computerized machine.

What really made me sell them is we're moving cross-country, and need to unload "stuff." Since I haven't really used either machine in years (although I did use each again recently to see if I would suddenly love them....I didn't), I decided it was time to let them go.

:) Good for you - lose the guilt. They aren't for everyone. Back when that's all they had, there were some struggles, and I am sure a lot of us love the new glitzy models. Everyone to her own sewing machine I always say.Hope they go to someone who likes them and doesn't toss them. I like to see old machines with those who love them.

While I love the old ones, they aren't for everyone, nor are the modern ones. I'm the opposite of you, where I always think I want a new, computerized machine, but there's no joy in it like there is with my treadle.

Glad you found it out, and that you know what makes you happy!

Good for you. It took me well over 6 months to come to the conclusion that vintage Singers and most older machines are good for some people, but I was not one of those people.

You like your Sapphire. I tried it twice and decided it was not for me. I am really glad it is for you.

Yes, lose the guilt. The people who bought your Singers are feeling very happy about their new finds tonight.

Funny thing about going to somebody who likes them, over 50% of the responses I got from Craig's List (15 responses between 11pm when I posted and 8am when I checked my email) said "I promise to take good care of it!" That cracked me up! It also made me feel much better about getting rid of them, I always felt bad they just sat in my closet gathering dust.

I still have hopes that a 6000 series Viking will hold magic for me. I seem to be a Viking girl, and have liked every single model I have ever played with.

Don't be guilty, I agree they aren't for everyone. After reading a lot of SMAD posts last year, I bought a 15-91 and 401A but I could not bond with them. They have long been sold and I'm happy with my Bernina. I'm a bells and whistles kind of girl.

I tried to love a couple of Kenmores I bought (because of this site) and I hated them. Someone, somewhere said they make terrific boat anchors. I've had two Janomes that should have been dropped off at the nearest marina too. Love my vintage Bernina 931, and my newer ones, and I couldn't live without my Singer 201. You have to connect with your machine, or sewing becomes a drudgery.

Hey, life is too short to sew on a machne that doesn't do it for you. :). I'm the same way about vintage White machines. I've had a couple and we just didn't click together. Best to send them on their way to someone who will enjoy them while you sew on the machines you love--everybody wins :)
