Hello all!

So I have been asked to make a vest for a man from my church. I hadn't really considered his shape until I measured him recently. He has a very large round belly.

My vest pattern has darts, so I am thinking that I should slash and spread the pattern front to give more girth over his middle? But what happens to the grainline?

Can anyone point me in a helpful direction? I will go through FFRP and see if there is anything helpful there.

Start by omitting the front darts. Actually, if the bottom of the vest extends below that jolly round belly, you may want to lower them. The finished vest is supposed to lie pretty close to the shirt.

I would try adjusting darts and letting out the side seam on both front and back. I would just redraw the side seam, tapering out the addition at the armscye, but you can slash your pattern piece from bottom hem to armscye stitching line about where the front notch would be, too.

Regarding the grainline, the front grainline should be parallel to the front edge. I'm like 99% confident that that's what you'll want to do.

This tutorial from Pam Erny might help: Pam Erny's tutorials. Scroll down to the one called "Shirt Pattern Alteration for Full Hips and Prominent Abdomen."

Thanks so much, Tom and Debbie. It's good to know I was close to the right track.
