Date: 2/12/12 2:14 PM I am making a dress for my son's christening . Either Vogue 8511 or Vogue 8648. I will probably go for the first one so that the structural properties of the Taffeta are seen in the pleats.
I am underlining with Silk Organza ( I am taking the Susan Khalje class on craftsy see thread here !
The Taffeta is the kind that is two tone and almost as if in some lights it is one colour , tilt it and its a different colour. ( I think it's called Shot ???)
Anyway what I want to know is how do I press as I sew ? with or without steam ?
What kind of needle ? I'm guessing a tiny one ?
The dress will be dry clean only so do I press the Polyester Taffeta before I sew ? I heard someone another forum said it shrank when she pressed the seams.
Thanks in advance. ------ I'm no longer blogging but here's my Flickr

Date: 2/15/12 2:25 PM I made a skirt of of a polyester taffeta and the major issue for me was making sure to use a low heat setting when I pressed. I prewashed so I think that helped with any potential shrinkage issues, but if my iron was too hot then the fabric started to crinkle. I used steam but I think if I worked with it again I wouldn't since I'm sure it contributed to the crinkling. I can't remember the size of the needle I used - either 70/10 or 80/12 universal.
While my skirt came out beautiful, polyester taffeta doesn't breathe *at all* so it isn't my most comfortable skirt to wear, even though I lined it with Ambiance. ------ -- Anne
