I have a couple ideas for contests that are a result of recent posts:

1. Sewing Machine Cover Contest
2. Decorative Stitches Contest
3. Serger Item Contest..such as items in Ready,Set, Serge

Please include a UFO Contest in 2013. We haven't had one for at least two years so we're due to add this as a contest in 2013.

Since this is a new thread on this subject, I will restate my suggestions from earlier this year:

1. Free Pattern Contest (See the free pattern thread for suggestions.) The main problem I see with this is that the committee will need to decide ifan actual pattern is required. Many free "patterns" are instructions for self-drafting. For example a front waist yoke on a skirt: make a rectangle that is your waist measurement/2 + 3" L x 6" W

2. Franken-Pattern Contest: Make a garment or costume (should it also be open to bags and or home-dec?) that uses pieces from 2 or more separate patterns (i.e., bodice from S1806 and sleeves from S4823). Unless a new pattern category is added, the committee will need to decide if the reviews should be written for all patterns used. I think they should.

I should also add that, not having either a serger or an embroidery machine, those contests don't particularly excite me. Having a contest where using one or both is welcome, even encouraged is fine. Maybe something like Embellished Table Linens (table cloths, napkins, place mats, runners, doilies, mug rugs, etc.) - people could be encouraged to embellish using quilting, applique, embroidery, beading, whatever.

I like both of those ideas! How about one for craft items or accessories (other than handbags) such as: nook covers, placemats, pillowcases, hats, etc.

Let's go back to two months on the Fabric Stash and Pattern Stash Contests. Members of PR, myself included, build up some large stashes of fabric and patterns and need longer than one month to use some of it up.

Mini Wardrobe Contest for two months vice one. Fast sewists can whip out a wardrobe in just one month, but us tortoises need an extra month.

Watch out for the 2013 contest poll. We will be sending that out very soon.

I suggested a techniques contest in the poll. Perhaps a beginner would be required to use one of the techniques, intermediate two, and advanced three. And maybe the entry could be required to include an explanation for why the technique was chosen. A bibliography of sorts should be included as well; citing reference materials or including online links that were used to learn or improve upon the techniques. Contest photos would need to include photos depicting the use of the techniques within the item constructed. And entrants at all levels should be encouraged to seek out, if possible, one new technique that they have not used before.

Use of an exceptional tip should be weighted the same as a technique. Lena's gelatin, Pam's collar point turning.......anything that encourages and aids in an improved finished garment and an improved sewing experience.

I would hope that the contest could include garments. Garments and accessories would be good to. Accessories only would be limiting.

Filled out the survey then suddenly thought of another idea. lol!
What about 'Animals' as a theme. Could be use of animal print, fake fur, a motif (poodle on a poodle skirt?) or just a dress cut in a way to give the impression of a type of animal. I.e. black & white colour blocking to suggest a cat?
