Silk fabric, thread choices? wedding dress.. silk; what thread to use?

Lining may or may not be silk.. might run out of $$$$ by then... and use cotton batiste or bemberg in the full skirt.. but will use china silk for bodice. Anyone with advice here? Thanks! ------ ... cleverly disguised as a responsible adult!

Why? Because cotton and silk are natural fibers. If I used polyester, I was too afraid that when the client sat down, the CB seam would pull, because the polyester thread was so durable, and would create little holes in the CB seam. I liked it because it had the right color and sheen. I used silk thread for the alencon lace because when I pieced the appliques, the thread "disappeared". Gutermann silk thread can be found at Joann, often with 50% off sale, plus the PR 10% discount. Have fun - is this for your dress?

You could use a poly too if you wanted. I have sewn with both on silk. A very find cotton thread worked beautifully on one garment I made. I only had that thread in grey and that is the color I needed. I wouldn't recommend silk thread at all. I used it last year when sewing linen and loved sewing with it and the end results. It completely disappeared and left no bulk at all in the stitching. The joke about using it for buttonholes is that your garment will fall apart but the buttonholes will be intact. Just like everything, everyone will have their own opinion but this is the recommendation I hear more than anything else when working with silk and I have heard this from much more advanced/experienced sewists than me. It is the first time I have sewn with this fine fabric, and I chose to use a silk thread, because of the fine texture and smoothness of the silk. I used a very fine needle also, and the combination of the silk thread and the fine needle really great! No snagging, slubbing, with the silk thread moving so smoothly through the fine texture of the voile. I actually had more trouble with the fabric developing small holes in it, from pressing with too much steam. That really shocked me, more than anything else during the construction of the shirt. So I would sure use the silk thread, and also if you want more info about using silk thread and some of the rumors about silk thread, take a visit to the Superior Thread website. They sell a silk thread called with the name of Tire, and it is wonderful thread. I actually learned about this thread at the Sewing Expo in Puyallup Washington, from the woman who previously sold the Tire silk line here in the States. I was skeptical, having always used poly/cotton blends my whole sewing life, but she really convinced me of all the wonderful virtues of silk thread, and once I used it I was sold. I don't use it on all the things I make, and I don't believe some of the things I did about silk thread as I did before, like it is too expensive, and not as strong as poly/cotton. Good luck with your project. I bet you will be convinced to use the silk!
