Date: 2/20/12 4:04 PM My beloved DH can never just accept what I offer to make for him without some special request. I offer to make him a shirt and of course it needs to have french cuffs. In his defense that's all he buys but come on work with me here. I'm learning.
So how about it? Any of you guys know of a pattern with french cuffs? I've been googling my little heart out and coming up short. |

May have spoken too soon. Looks like M2447 has a french cuff option. |

Date: 2/20/12 7:14 PM I had a difficult time searching through the tutorials for a french cuff style shirt (can't guarantee she actually *has* one), but Pamela Erny's blog has a lot of shirt making information (she is a professional men's shirt maker).
You can also check out Islander Sewing System patterns. They are on the pricier side but drafted pretty well.
I really enjoy David Coffin's book, it really helps you elevate your shirt making skills. Please share how your shirt comes out with us!

Date: 2/20/12 7:54 PM It's just a rectangle for a french cuff. Cut the side that's going to be on the inside of the fold 1/4in. shorter. You also have to do something funny with the placket that I can never remember. If your pattern instructions aren't clear, be sure to post again so someone can sort it out.
Men's dress shirts are very tough. Be sure to try a solid color. You might also try to do the seams with a French seam, then stitch them down to make a flat fell seam.
Also, there really should be zero ease at the sleeve cap, but I bet the pattern has some in it. I'd check that first, then remove any ease from the sleeve cap if there is any.
I don't know if the KwikSew men's shirt pattern has French cuffs, but it's a very good pattern. I'd consider it. |

Subject: Mens Dress Shirt Pattern w/French Cuffs Date: 2/24/12 2:34 PM Thanks guys. I picked up the pattern yesterday but not sure when I will start sewing. I did notice there doesn't seem to be any variation/adjustment for the neck size which I'm pretty sure is a big deal in men's dress shirts. So I will definitely need to check out some of the references listed before getting started. |
