I am making a gore- tex coat and I am not sure what fabric to use for the lining. I read in Threads not to use polyester or cotton. Any suggestions? I want the coat to be light weight .

Do not take THREADS magazine as the last word. They have a glaring, awful error in an article, in their last issue.

If you can't use polyester, I don't know what else is left. My Gore-tex jacket is lined with a polyester mesh type fabric. I have a rain coat that is a gore-tex type fabric and the lining appears to be polyester (a clone of Hang Loose, found at JoAnn's).

The whole point of Gore tex is that it breathes, and I assume you paid plenty for it. I would agree with not using cotton since it absorbs water and will end up being wet with any exertion. The opposite is true of polyester as it doesn't breath and you you negate the properties of Goretex that you bought it for. It depends on what you are using the jacket for. Many athletic jackets are lined with mesh of some kind. Probably made with polyester, but open weave mesh. For a solid lining I'd use Bemberg rayon.

Thank you for your help. The coat will be for casual wear but I wanted to make sure to put the correct lining in.

Mesh or nylon taffeta (uncoated) is commonly used with Gore-tex, and sometimes both. Often the slippey taffeta is used in the sleeves, pockets, with the mesh being used in the main body.

Good point about the non-mesh being used in the sleeves. Ring prongs would catch on the mesh stuff.

Have you heard of Seattle Fabrics? They are a store (online also) that sells outdoor and marine fabrics, and all the things you might need to make a coat like the one you are making. You might check them out for good ideas to choose the right lining for a Gortex coat.

Good luck!
