I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I'm dying to make a pencil skirt, and want to use this J Crew No 2. pencil skirt as a model.

http://www.jcrew.com/womens_special_sizes/size16/skirts/PRDOVR~78837/78837.jsp

Does anyone have any recommendations as to where I would buy fabric? Or recommendations on a pattern? I've tried Joanne's, Michele's, and Hobby Lobby, and they all don't carry a thick stretch fabric that I would like to use for this. I plan on going to the J Crew outlet this weekend to check it out, but I'm assuming its probably a 98% cotton, 2% spandex blend. They describe it as a double-serge cotton with a hint of stretch, if that helps. I'm assuming I'll probably have to order the fabric online, which is fine. I was thinking of just using a skirt that already fits as a guide, but I'd feel a little better with a pattern (since I am a newbie, hence this post). Thanks for the help!

I would search for sateen cotton fabric. It looks pretty close to what they're calling "double serge cotton".

Stretch poplin is a good fit, heavier than cotton and comes in pretty prints too--I've found some at Hancock's for kids, try fabric.com too.

I have this super pretty floral cotton - a Lisette fabric from Joann's. It's got a bit of a stretch to it, but it's really easy to work with like cotton. It's got a white background with blue & green flowers all over... super pretty, easy to work with and has some stretch! Maybe see if you can find it at a Joanns near you or online??

Double-serge cotton, that's creative catalog copy. Sounds fancy. Serge is a fabric in a twill weave and can be woven from various fibers like cotton, silk, and wool. Any cotton twill with some lycra will do, it just needs some substance and crispness for this skirt.

ETA The "double" in the description probably means the twill is more pronounced than in a regular serge fabric.

I have been fondling those Lisette fabrics for a few weeks and thought the pale yellow would make a great dress for spring/summer. I just can't decide on a pattern to know how much fabric to buy. It seems to be nice fabric for the money.

Awesome, thanks for the advice! I feel like I have a better idea of what to look for. I definitely had a feeling that "double serge" was marketing copy. I work in marketing, so I should know!Sewliz, thanks for the explanation, all of these different names for fabrics is confusing! I just know the fabric when I feel it, so it's a bit intimidating to buy online.

heathergwo, I think I actually saw those fabrics. The one I wanted (the checkered teal) seemed too thick, and more like a blanket than a skirt. :P The pattern was really nice though!

I found this fabric, but it doesn't look like they have samples available before I buy:

Seems like a really good price though!

Fashion Fabrics club is pretty hit or miss...I've always had pretty good success with them considering their prices, especially.I'd go ahead & order it (along with a backup or two ) and you can always return what won't work.

I also would like to make a skirt like the No. 2 pencil skirt from J. Crew. Did you find a commercial pattern that is similar?

Thanks
