Hi all, I have a question if a old laptop has windows ce net 4.2 on it, does that read txt files and jpeg and mp3 and pdf? Also if something has a wi fi card do I need to pay for a service or will it just work if the laptop is charged and a place has wi fi ? As you can tell I know nothing about computers. Has anyone heard of Psion net booK and CF card and linux?

Have you tried opening a txt, jpeg or pdf file?

Not sure about mp3 and maybe on the Wi-Fi.

I have my Wi-Fi password protected. Not everyone does and you may be able to pick up their signal.

For consistency, it would be best to have your own provider for wi-fi.

Windows CE is an old OS and you will have to see if there is software for reading those files you mention. Any machine has to have the software for handling various files. Hopefully there is a text reader - like Notebook or Wordpad built into the accessories, and for the pictures, there may or may not be anything there for pictures - if you can look in the Accessories folder in the programs folder (I am assuming it has this - I don't know) you will see what you have there. As to WiFi - well, if you pay for internet service you need a wireless router to get internet wirelessly. If you go somewhere where there is free WiFi you probably still need to sign in somehow - usually with a password you can get at the counter of a place like Starbucks or McDonald's. I would recommend you get a book like Dummies Guide to Windows but you probably won't find one now for CE. Also, whatever this machine has on it is probably not robust enough for today's uses. But it might work for you for something - but you do need to get some computer and internet help.

Thank you all! I already feel this is not going to meet my basic needs, oh well.
