Whatever happened to Tonettes for Girls?! Toni perms, Spoolie rollers, etc.

I need one of those now, as hair as gone straight and thinner. Anyone still do perms or use good home brews? I'm always intrigued by the older ladies who look like they get their hair done once/week and it never moves after. Mine would not do that, even in the days of perms. And I did roller perms in the 70's too!

I don't know why they stopped making spoolie rollers. I'm terrible at curling my own hair, but those were very user-friendly. I hated it so much. Since then,I have never, ever done perms or dyes to my hair and I am almost 60 with hair past my waist in a braid. I'm a firm beliver in natural hair and you were born with the color that matches your skin best. I was so relived when some of the guys I work with that had the jeri-curl cut it off and went natural, looked much better. ( I even wear it in two braided pigtails when we travel on the motorcycle, less little hairs to snarl up at the nape of my neck) Jeannie

I tell you, I don't know how we did it: with our heads 2" off the pillow, plastic digging in at every angle, and rarely finding a comfortable position to fall asleep. Every single night! My generation's version of foot binding... j.

What those things did to a person's hair was criminal!

My mom would put our hair in rollers the night before school pictures and maybe for Easter or something, and I remember how horrible they were to sleep in. Every night is just crazy! When I want to curl my hair now I do pin curls, just a bobby pin to hold each curl in place. Not 100% comfortable to sleep in, but a thousand times better than actual rollers. Rag curls are also much more comfortable than regular rollers.
