Date: 3/7/12 4:55 PM Nostalgia.... found an old perm photo today...
I need one of those now, as hair as gone straight and thinner.
Anyone still do perms or use good home brews?
I'm always intrigued by the older ladies who look like they get their hair done once/week and it never moves after. Mine would not do that, even in the days of perms.
And I did roller perms in the 70's too! |

Date: 3/7/12 5:23 PM You can still buy perm kits -- my daughter has had a friend give her a home perm a couple of times.
I don't know why they stopped making spoolie rollers. I'm terrible at curling my own hair, but those were very user-friendly. I have a heated set that Clairol made a decade or so ago, but I still don't understand why they discontinued the regular kind!

Date: 3/7/12 9:53 PM Tonettes...ugh. I so remember those. My grade school pictures and the dorky perm that didn't take. I thought I'd be rid of those forever....and I am... ------ "We don't impose our rhythm on Nature. The key is to respect and live within Her." Jean-Charles Boisset, Winemaker

Date: 3/8/12 3:08 AM Me too,
Just about the worst thing ever was when my mother gave me one of those when I was in the first grade. I hated it so much.
Since then,I have never, ever done perms or dyes to my hair and I am almost 60 with hair past my waist in a braid.
I'm a firm beliver in natural hair and you were born with the color that matches your skin best.
I was so relived when some of the guys I work with that had the jeri-curl cut it off and went natural, looked much better.
( I even wear it in two braided pigtails when we travel on the motorcycle, less little hairs to snarl up at the nape of my neck)

Date: 3/8/12 7:05 AM Not a perm, but you brought back memories of sleeping in big pink curlers. I tell you, I don't know how we did it: with our heads 2" off the pillow, plastic digging in at every angle, and rarely finding a comfortable position to fall asleep.
Every single night!

Date: 3/8/12 8:01 AM The spoolies were nice because you could actually sleep in them. But those pink things with the bristles inside, and then the pink plastic pins to fasten them down--oh the pain! ------ "We don't impose our rhythm on Nature. j. Every single night? Wow. My mom would put our hair in rollers the night before school pictures and maybe for Easter or something, and I remember how horrible they were to sleep in. Every night is just crazy!
When I want to curl my hair now I do pin curls, just a bobby pin to hold each curl in place. Not 100% comfortable to sleep in, but a thousand times better than actual rollers. Rag curls are also much more comfortable than regular rollers. We read about them in the Little House books and convinced my mom to do them a few times instead of rollers.------ http://theslapdashsewist.blogspot.com

I think you must have used some different kind than the ones I'm talking about. The ones I used to use were soft rubber and very gentle -- they gave you a soft curl and didn't hurt your hair at all.
