This contest is a chance to try out vintage patterns, learn the differences between those and current patterns, and possibly try some traditional but new-to-you techniques.

The rules for this contest:
Make a garment using a vintage pattern. For the purposes of this contest a pattern is considered Vintage if it was issued BEFORE 1978 and printed in 1978. If the pattern declares that it Vintage instruction books from the same date range, to 1978 , may also be used if it provides instructions for creating your garment and you follow their guidelines. So patterns from 1978 are in. Lutterlohs from that time are also included.

Be aware that most patterns from this time frame run smaller than modern patterns, so if you are purchasing a pattern check the sizing carefully. You can make your adjustments before you start working on your actual entry.

Patterns must be original vintage prints, or exact re-prints of the vintage pattern (for example, reprints such as those that are available at Vintage Fashion Library and Vintage Pattern Lending Library). Re-issues, vintage inspired, retro, and self-drafted patterns using modern books are not included in this contest.

Minor design changes are allowed. If major changes are required to make a wearable item, please pick a different pattern for this contest.

Fabrics and techniques do not need to be vintage. However, both are encouraged, if available.

The contest is restricted to clothing. Crafts and home dec items are not included. Accessories as part of a clothing item can be included.

Prizes
Studio Cherie- one pattern to every participant!! Thank you Studio Cherie.
There will also be a winner by Pattern Review member votes. The entry with most reader votes will get a signed copy of the PatternReview book - 1,000 Clever Sewing Shortcuts and Tips, sponsored by Patternreview.com

Voting guideline suggestions:
- How well does the garment meet the rules? Did they make a garment wearable today, and not a costume?
- Are the construction methods and fabric choices well suited to the design and to each other?
- Is the review complete and well written?
- Taking into account the stated ability level of the entrant, how well does the garment fit?

*Rules that apply to all contests:
1. All reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time US on the last day of the contest.
2. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.
3. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!
4. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry.

* Contest Eligibility
1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the start of a contest is eligible to enter. Contest managers can only sew along.
2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.
3. Any member who's won 1st place in a contest on Pattern Review ended in the previous 4 months is ineligible to win another contest (for that 4 month period).
Here's how to particpate in contests.

Velowsewer, thank you so much for managing this contest, and for all those helpful link!
I have been really looking forward to this contest more than any other so far this year, as I recently came into a few really nice vintage patterns. I am so glad the cimmittee decided on a date of 1978!
There are 3 patterns that I am considering, from 1973, 1974, and 1975 respectively. I have some really great fabrics selected for the first 2, but undecided on the third. I would love some opinions on which of these patterns others like best.
I will have to add pics of fabrics I have later, but for this one I have an ivory and tiny dusky blue floral for the bodice, and a matching solid dusky blue for the flutter sleeves and lower drape. I'd be making the Jeans top, view B, but with the sleeves from view A.

For the next, I'd make view 2, probably without a closure though. I have a lovely sheer spring green knit with ivory embroidered flowers, and matcing ivory lace trim for this bell sleeved cardigan. I think I have enough fabric to make a matching cami underneath, too (if that isn't a bad idea...too matchy?)
I have been planning on making this one for a while, and this seems a perfect opportunity.

Last but not least I have this cute summer dress, I would make view 3, as I have a thing for maxi length dresses any time of year, though maybe shorter would be better for this? Anyway, I have a couple of cottons that might work. I'll have to dig around in the stash and see.

So any opinions would be appreciated. I may very well try and make 2 of these (maybe, lol), but don't think I could manage all 3 in just a month. I've done only a few vintage patterns, and the sizing and fitting is a little scary.

I can't wait to see what others have planned!

I'm so disorganized!! I've been so excited about this contest and am SO happy this thread has finally started (I've been watching for days) but haven't thought about which of my treasured patterns I'm going to use!
When can we register? I have had so much on lately that I haven't had time for pleasure sewing in ages - am really looking forward to it lol
Its almost bedtime here anyway, so I'll sleep on it and have a good look at them all tomorrow, but just wanted to say YAYYYYYYY that the thread is up!

Hey Aurora. How are you going? I'm so pleased you're going to enter. It's it neat how the Simplicity 697 is for stretch fabrics? I'm sure today's knits have a lot better stretch and memory than in the 70's. The summer maxi will definitely get you through this season but if you do all three, that would be fab!.

Hey JennaM. Definitely sleep on it because registration should be up shortly. Hang in there and see what beautiful work you can do once March 15 comes around. Cheers.

I have a pattern in my stash from the mid 1920s that came to me without instructions or drawings....just the pieces in the original mailing envelope. What a challenge this one would be --- lay out the pieces, guess at what the garment will be and then pick fabric and put it together only by reading the punched holes in the pattern. I hope I have time to put it together and share my results.

2012 : starting stash 386, net additions 206, used 164, ending stash 428...I'm never going to get in front of this pile of fabric!

I have been working on the 1912 patterns from VPLL. I finished a Princess Slip Pattern last week but turned it into a summer dress, so I got to work with lace inserts which was fun.
My next pattern is a Ladies wrap. I've been going through the stash looking for fabric.

What I really would like is a Vionnet dress but there are no patterns, only a flat pattern on a grid in a Japanese pattern book, with no instructions so I'm guessing that's a no go for this contest.

Hey Kathi R, Your pattern does sound like a construction challenge. There should be plenty of resources available and PR people who can give you lots of advice to complete this pattern in time. 1920's styles are in for this Spring. Sounds great!

Hey Loti, I had seen Karen's version of the Princess Slip Pattern that Karen had done. I love yours to. Does anyone out there know where to get a Vionnet dress pattern from? I've seen Vionnet dress in Paris so it would be a shame if you couldn't find a pattern in time for this challenge.
