Date: 3/10/12 8:31 AM I like to haunt my local thrift and consignment stores, have found gathered skirts of quality fabrics that yield new tank tops/kids dresses for summer (washed to reveal any wear), plus stores donate things with tags still on. Vintage clothing often has wonderful laces/buttons for trims or mix these with valance pieces for fabric altered art prints.
Sheer floral scarves at 99 cents or less I use as yoke overlays for the front of gathered tops or for ruching strips and coiled flowers.
In RTW, many of the tops have clear elastic loops meant for securing to hangars. These are long enough to re-use for the shoulder seams of stretchy tops.

Date: 3/11/12 10:15 AM Great ideas. Do you have any pictures of the yoke overlay with a scarf? I want to see if I'm picturing it correctly.

Date: 3/11/12 1:56 PM I cut one yoke front piece of the 99 cents sheer white scarf with semi-solid swirl leaves, then the regular yokes of my fabric--an off white knit with slight silver shimmer from Fabric.com.
B5219--like the blue sleeveless photo. I don't have an applique machine so the sheer lets the underlying color show thru, makes a dressier top for summer.

I use to haunt these places just for the buttons. You never know what you might find that is fabulous at a thrift store. |
