How to prevent shrinkage with newly bought fabric?

Can someone please help me! I just need to know whether i need to do something to prevent them from shrinking in the wash? Mum told me to just soak them in cold water? Is that all I need to do ??

A good practice is to wash a 4"x4" swatch of fabric in the same method that you will launder the garment. You should compare the swatch after the wash and then after the drying to see if there's size, color changes or hand. If something was going to shrink, I would want to shrink before making the garment not after.

For the silk, take it to the dry cleaners first. Then when the person who buys the garment won't have any problems afterwards when they have the blouse cleaned.
