Date: 3/14/12 9:21 PM Does anyone know of a pattern that's similar to the 40's style dress Kristen Schaal wore on last night's Daily Show? Here's a video clip. I'm going to do some searching of my own, but I thought if someone knows of one offhand, it could save me some time. Thanks!

Date: 3/14/12 10:53 PM The dress is a take from a basic empire with some tweeking. I bet if you look in your pattern file, you'll find a few patterns with pieces that can reproduce this dress. PR has given some online classes in pattern drafting that should give you the skills/knowledge to produce this simple dress. Maybe for me it is a no brainer as I don't buy patterns and drape or make my own most of the time. This could be a fun time to put your creativity into motion and not get stuck on having to have a pattern. The pattern exists in you and I'm sure in your pattern stash already. I'm sure PR, Threads, Burda, YouTube and other blog tutorials have the info you need to create this dress without a pattern - as I said before, I see it as a basic take on an empire dress - and the sleeve is basically a gather with a band. |

Date: 3/14/12 11:31 PM Yes! Just watched that episode tonight and told my husband that I totally have the pattern for that dress, from the December 2011 Burda. The sleeves are different, and it looked like there was a little modesty panel involved, but the look and the fabric weight are quite similar. Of course, my husband was unimpressed, but my mind was whirling. That color was great, it really brought out here eyes!

Date: 3/15/12 6:00 AM That dress is sooo cute - and the details make it great. Looks like the sleeves have a pleat? and I love the detail of the tiny fabric covered buttons. Hopefully someone will have a great suggestion of a dress or blouse you can use. (I am not one with the skills to make my own patterns )
I am organizing my patterns (again) and if I find anything that might help, I will post for you. |

V-neck Dress Thank you! This dress is very similar to Kristen's. Now if I can just find something with similar sleeves, maybe a blouse pattern. I agree, the color looked amazing with her eyes. Blue isn't my color, though, so I'm probably going with red or yellow. |

Thanks for your faith in my abilities, but I am just getting back into serious sewing (beyond mending, lol) after almost 12 years. Even at the height of my skills, I was still using patterns, albeit altering some of them quite a bit. Right now, the thought of making something without a pattern or making a pattern completely from scratch is too daunting, but it's something I aspire to try once I get my sewing confidence back. -- Edited on 3/15/12 1:03 PM -- |

Date: 3/15/12 2:21 PM Yeah I am sure I have something like that. I have been practicing details lately. making simple things and then adding zing. I have decided empire waist just makes me look pregnant. |
