Hi everyone!
I know fitting is probably the biggest issue I've come across so far in sewing, so I decided to have a go at making my own paper tape dress form, like it seems a lot of sewers on this forum have made.

It wasn't super easy, but I think it gave a great result- just thought I'd share it for anyone who's not heard of it- since normal dress forms are super expensive, plus they don't replicate your true body like this method!

Check it out on my blog if you want:

Thanks for looking I really hope this info helps someone, it was quite a bit of work to put together, after all!

That is a great-looking dressform! She resembles you greatly and appears strong and serviceable. She is not going to sag with time, either, unlike many duct tape forms.

Thank for the fine tutorial with pictures, too.

Nice tutorial, Johanna! They are not easy to write well, but yours is very clear and makes a lot of sense. I have a DTD, but I think the next one will be paper tape. Now just to get going and actually DO it.

That's a good-looking dress form, and your tutorial makes it seem do-able. I usually laugh off Mother's Day, but maybe I'll ask my husband to suffer through making one of these this year.

Thanks!

These paper tape forms can be extremely long lasting. In a small museum in the Gold Country of California, I saw one that had been made--obviously by someone skilled--sometime around 1912, judging by the corseted figure. It had been lacquered, but it was only a couple of layers thick (very short, diagonal lengths of tape, btw), was not stuffed, and it was in absolutely perfect shape.

Yes, you do make it look do-able. I want a dress form too, but it seemed too daunting. Great job!

Hi Jo,

Both your dress form and tutorial are awesome! I am so impressed...and a bit jealous. You'll need to let us know how helpful it becomes for your sewing adventures.

Way to go!

Gail

really nice. I have short, sloping shoulders so can never buy a dress form and pad it. I did a dtd but this looks sturdier

You have inspired me to lose the stone I put on over the winter. The thought of making a double of my present size is too daunting.

Maybe I could get it done before sewing my summer wardrobe.
