Does it need to be bias?

DS wants his pjs to look like Han Solo's pants. And yes, for those who remember such things, he is 31 years old. They are all little boys forever, aren't they?

I think I will sew the outer leg seam first and apply the stripe before sewing up the inseam and crotch, but wondering if I have to go to the extra effort of making the stripe (using a medium weight broadcloth) on the bias or not? My tendency is to think not, but maybe that is the laziness talking.

Just my two cents -- if the base fabric is a knit, then yes to the bias; if the base fabric is woven, then bias is not necessary.

I've added a lot of stripes to the sides of men's pants legs in both woven and knit and the above is what works for me.

Thanks Sheila - he likes light pjs so I make them from broadcloth, so I won't do bias.

He usually likes them board shorts length (just above the knee) and I use the size small, but I made him a full length pair in September that he says fit really well, but drag at the knee and pull down when he walks. I am guessing the leg is just a little narrow to have enough walking ease.

Now this brings up another question that I hadn't considered. I was just going to make a medium instead of a small, but he does like the closer fit. Perhaps i should just use the small for the upper part and morph into a larger width just above the knee... I wish I could get him here to try stuff on, but that rarely happens.

If the small fits in the upper area, then I would stick with the small and morph to a larger leg width starting just above the knee -- add equal amount at the inseam and outseam.

Good Luck!!!
