Subject: Snaps or Zipper on Gore-Tex rain coat Date: 3/21/12 11:12 AM

Help- I do not know if I should put in a zipper or use snaps. The coat will be knee length. I like the idea of snaps but worry about the pulling on them and rips in fabric

My vote is zipper, maybe with a snap at the top.

I've never seen snaps only on a gore tex coat, only on the yellow industrial/fishing "banana suit" or kids wear.

Cheap fabrics, like cheap shoes, are a false economy.

I have an LoL Bean gore-tex jacket that has both a zipper and Velcro tabs over that. I never use the zipper; it is sooo easy just to press those velcros together. I might feel differently if I lived in an area with really violent weather, but for ordinary rain, it's fine.

Since its knee length maybe one of those zippers that unzips from the bottom would work nicely. It'll give you some mobility like when you're sitting in the car etc.

One thing to consider is that if you put holes in the Goretex for snaps or stitching than it can let water in at that point. If you use snaps you might want to attach the outer (female) side of the snap to the facing only. This way the outside face isn't punctured. You'd need to reinforce the facing to make sure the snap doesn't pull out.

You might also need to reinforce the snaps near the knees as there is generally more force in general use placed on zips and buttons at the knees than on the torso.

It's the journey, not the destination that counts

Thank you. Maybe Velcro is the way to close the coat.

I was thinking of just putting the zipper half way and maybe use Velcro as was suggested.

Thank you. That was my fear of the snaps. I am trying to avoid multiple/additional seams. I want to keep it very simple.

I made two goretex jackets for a trip to Ireland. Both have zippers and both jackets have stood up well.
