Hello, there are some Singer cabinets that look more like a desk and do not have a top that folds over. from some of the pictures i have seen they look like they have a wood insert that goes into the hole and fills the hole when the machine is down. I dont know how to paste a pic here but i want to make a wood insert for a table i have so i can leave the flap open, fill the hole and use the entire surface for a desk. if anyone can tell me how the wood insert attached or can post close up pictures of theirs that would be great! thank you

I have one of those tables. However, it was converted a long time ago so I could use a new SM in the open space. A shelf was added and the SM remains exposed.

I think the insert had tabs that could be turned to hold in in place.

If you want the opening to remain closed, you could put small brackets or a frame of wood inside the opening to support the insert.

These old Singer cabinets show up on Craigslist here in Atlanta all the time. I have one with a 501a machine now. I find the insert a bit of a pain once it is removed because I have to stick it somewhere and then I always seem to knock it over. I imagine you could improvise with a piece of craft wood from an art supply store that you can shape to fit into your cutout. I just finished making an insert to fit around my new to me Bernina 730e.

Well if anyone wants to sell me their old insert i'm interested. otherwise i would like to see how the originals were made. I am sure i can just fit a piece of wood over the hole but in keeping with tradition i am just curious to see exactly how singer did it. I am guessing there were 2 holes drilled out for the mounting pins and some kind of bracket that held up the front half. If anyone has one they can look at and describe or post photos that would be most appreciated! thanks
