I'm considering buying one so i don't have to trek out to Joann, but wondering whether printable is really a time saver. I've used other printable patterns, but only for simpler children's things and not a complicated dress.

I would consider one if I couldn't obtain it any other way, but I much prefer my patterns already printed. It takes so long to tape them together after they're printed, not to mention the amount of paper it takes. I can see where some people would prefer the convenience of printing from home, though.

I've downloaded many free sewing patterns in a PDF format m-sewing from here. I like the fact that I can print just a neckline, sleeve or other detail to add to a regular pattern. I also found that it was a great way to test new styles before investing in a pattern. If you can find the same pattern at the store, for about the same price I would buy the envelope version. I use a laser printer, trace patterns off and most I have used so far have been tops. Even a simple pattern looks different on a stack of 8 1/2"x 11" sheets of paper.

I've actually purchased some and printed them out but have yet to tape them together and make them.

As someone else said, the taping is tedious. If you're purchasing them from sewingpatterns.com, you won't be able to download the pdf, just print from the web. I believe you are limited in the number of times you can print the pattern and the time it is available to you to print (ie. they do expire after you've bought them, which is why I've printed mine). Unfortunately, there wasn't a way for me to determine which pages had which pattern bits, so the entire pattern needs to be printed.
